Cashing in while the stock is high right before earnings season. We'll see if this one has further room to rise!

Fleck Signs Seven-Year Extension

The University of Minnesota and head football coach P.J. Fleck have agreed to a new seven-year contract extension, pending approval from the Board of Regents. The extension will keep Fleck in Maroon and Gold through the 2026 season.

"It is a tremendous honor to lead this team and represent the University of Minnesota and this great state," said Fleck. "Our family absolutely loves Minnesota, and we are excited to continue to call this state home. We are building a championship culture – one that our fans can be proud of – through the academic, athletic, social and spiritual development of our student athletes. Heather and I are so thankful to our staff, Mark Coyle, President Gabel and the Board of Regents for seeing the vision we have for our football program."

Fleck is in his third year at Minnesota and has the Gophers ranked No. 13 after an 8-0 start and a 5-0 mark in the Big Ten. He has led the Gophers to success the program has not seen in decades, as Minnesota was last 8-0 in 1941 and the Gophers were last 5-0 in the conference in 1961.

Minnesota has won 10 straight games under Fleck, which is the third-longest winning streak in the nation. In addition, the Gophers are 8-2 in their last 10 Big Ten games. That 8-2 mark in conference play leads the West division and ranks behind only Ohio State (10-0) and Penn State (9-1).

Fleck is 20-13 at Minnesota, but is 12-2 in his last 14 games. His winning percentage of 60.6% ranks third in school history for anyone who has coached more than 30 games and is the best since Bernie Bierman, who last coached at Minnesota in 1950. Fleck recorded his 50th career win earlier this year to become the second youngest active FBS coach to reach that milestone.

"Coach Fleck has built a program that competes academically, athletically and socially," said Athletics Director Mark Coyle. "He recruits at an extremely high level and the program is seeing success it has not seen in nearly 80 years. His students are succeeding off the field, as the team has posted a record GPA and continually gives back to the community. I am thankful to President Gabel and the Board of Regents for their continued support, and I look forward to Coach Fleck continuing to lead this program."

Off the field, Fleck and his team can often be found at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital and have given back to the community by hosting diaper drives, turkey drives, a school supply drive and a canned food drive.

In the classroom, Minnesota has posted program record GPAs under Fleck. Academic honorees have not been announced yet for the 2019 season, but Minnesota currently has 85 players with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. In 2018, Minnesota had 39 players named Academic All-Big Ten and led the Big Ten with three players named Academic All-American.

So, the extension adds another three years to his current (or previous) deal. It's not seven additional years. It's basically scrapping his old deal and replacing it with a new 7-year deal that starts next year.

may be a quibble - but the average schmo reads "7-year extension" and might think that means they added 7 years onto the current deal. that's not the case. it's a new 7-year deal replacing the current deal, and adding three additional years in the process.

on the plus side, when they recruit the next Rodney Smith, they can promise him Fleck will be on campus for all 6 years of his career.

There are true "extensions" but most coach contract deals are generally a redo in some form.

And IMO you can kinda assume there are new plans (or non plans) made every year as far as these deals go.

I agree, the one negative to this has been all the stupid speculation on where Fleck was going.

They haven't released all the terms but have to believe there is going to be a significant buyout attached to this deal. If Fleck was looking to cash in and get out of town there is no way he would sign an extension right now. To me this is proof he means it when he says he truly loves it here and wants to be here for a long time.

Now go beat Penn State and let's keep this crazy ride going!
 

I'll be interested to see the raise, assistant pool increase, and most importantly the buyout figure.
 

Hell yeah, I think if I’m a player (especially underclassman) I’m not distracted by the contract news. I’m pumped. I know now that my coach wants to stay and believes in me and the rest of my teammates. I’m part of a team that he sees worth it to stay for. Also a huge help for incoming recruits.

PJ had a meditation expert in this week to teach the team how to calm themselves and meditate as well as a sleep specialist so they can still handle this great news and stay focused on the big game.
 

I'm almost more excited about this than the new Gopher Hole forum.

Sensational news - this is a deal that had to get done. Coyle realized - as many of us on Gopher hole did several weeks ago - that if you didn't get this done right now you were at a significant risk of a bigtime school such as a USC, Florida St. Texas etc. coming in with a huge package to poach him away at the end of the year. PJ Fleck probably cost himself some cash in doing this right now instead of going to the open market for a team desperate to win.

Regardless of how the Gophers fare over the next 4 games I like the direction this program is heading in a major way. Fleck is getting it done - and a lot faster than many thought he would, too!

TALON - Looks like you have secured a true winner at head coach with all he has done on and off the field. The proposed 7 year contract will give him and potential recruits the security that they will be playing under Fleck while not worrying about constant coaching and scheme changes.
 

Best part of that is, "and his staff"...
I'm glad to hear his staff is getting taken care of because they do so much of the dirty work. Keep your coordinators locked down.

Look forward to seeing the terms once they're out. Great news all around.
I hope the buyout is 1 Zillion dollars (mua hahahahaha)
