Lantz review

Freshman kicker Michael Lantz is now seven games into his first year and has made four of seven field-goal attempts. He’s also missed two of his 33 point-after attempts.

Fleck said Lantz has been what he expected.

“Very difficult to come into that role,” Fleck said, adding Lantz also only arrived on campus this past summer instead of as an early enrollee. “… He’s had some really big kicks, too. He had a great kick at Fresno State [to force overtime]. He doesn’t make that one, we’re not even talking about what we’re talking about these days. He’s also had some ones he probably would want back. It’s a typical year for a true freshman at kicker.”

Go Gophers!!

Two things that may play themselves out as the year goes on. One good, one bad

- the close games the Gophers have played in the first 3-4 weeks will prepare them for a battle down the stretch and help them come out on the winning side of that battle (fingers crossed).

- the kicking game will cost them a game at some point, whether it's not being able to convert a FG or the kickoff "specialist" Ryerse kicking a crucial KO out of bounds, ... again.

Let's hope the former comes to fruition and not the latter!

As far as Lantz, have to remember sometimes that he's a FR but I would probably agree with Fleck; considering that he's a FR, he's probably been about as good as one can expect I guess. His motion looks solid and repeatable, he just doesn't repeat it all the time. I would expect that to improve as gets more kicks under his belt

just for fun. stats comparison to a former "committed" recruit

Lantz made a huge kick vs Fresno. Massive. Just clutch as clutch can be, on the road. Gives me a lot of confidence.

He has missed some but everyone does. I'd have to re-watch but the one that was blocked and returned vs GSU I don't think was on Lantz.

Fleck handles his kickers better than what Zimmer does. Fleck encourages them, forget the last kick and moves on. Zimmer gets bent out of shape, makes comments to the press and does whatever to put more pressure on them than need be. Carlson is doing better for Oakland than what he did with the Vikings.

There is already a fair amount of pressure when kicking, why put more pressure on them. I like Lantz and believe he will do just fine in the long run.

IIRC Lantz struggles a little from the hashmark. We could help with playcalling. Run plays to try and get the ball centered if we know we are going to kick.

Kicking is weird because if someone else makes a mistake (misses a tackle, drops a pass, whiffs on a block, hits the wrong hole, etc) there is a lot of ways that they get bailed out. If a kicker misses a FG, that is almost also the end of that drive. Lantz is good, I like him. I think he'll be really good long-term.
