Go Gophers!!

Detroit Free Press chimes in:

3. Minnesota (7-0)
Last week: 6. Minnesota’s tour through the bottom half of the Big Ten continues this week with Maryland. The Golden Gophers have already beaten up on Purdue, Illinois, Nebraska and Rutgers. The easy schedule has allowed P.J. Fleck to gain some momentum in the third year of his coaching tenure after he initially struggled to make much headway.

Next up: vs. Maryland, 3:30 p.m. Saturday, ESPN.

Go Gophers!!

Crimson Quarry ranks their Whoosiers ahead of the Gophers. How can you put a 7-0 team at #7?

7. Minnesota Golden Gophers

Last Week: 42-7 win @ rutger (7-0)

SP+ Rankings: 15

They beat yet another bad football team so I bumped them up a spot. Maybe they’re actually good, who knows? This weekend they get Maryland at home and they’re heavy favorites. They should by all means be 8-0 heading into their matchup with Penn State on Novermber 9

It could be worse, MSU beat the Mighty Hoosiers and are ranked 8.

Power rankings should be a bit controversial. They are an opinion-based metric; it's not winning percentage. I wouldn't necessarily put us at #7, but I can still see Michigan being ahead of us, and maybe a few other teams too.

If we beat PSU how bad will that mean PSU is?

Yes, I can see Michigan ahead of us but not Indiana. I think #5 is about right with OSU, PSU, Wisconsin, and Michigan ahead of us. For the time being at least, Iowa should be behind us.

Of course, these weekly power ratings are designed to be somewhat volatile to pick up week-to-week highs and lows in performance. That's fine. At the end of the season, these likely will show a general consensus.

I cannot believe ESPN has Iowa ranked ahead of us. What a joke. They have lost to the two good teams they played and struggled with Purdue at home.

Well, given that we rank below them in ESPN's power index (not by much, though) that shouldn't be so surprising.

Hoosier Huddle chimes in:

3. MINNESOTA (7-0, 4-0)
Last Week’s Ranking: 4

Defeated Rutgers 42-7

Minnesota dominated Rutgers on Saturday in New Jersey. The Gophers have played extremely well as of late and they have fully taken advantage of a soft schedule. Minnesota is undefeated on the season, and the competition won’t pick up until they play Penn State on November 9th. With a struggling Maryland team coming to town next week, the Gophers have a prime opportunity to start the year 8-0. An impressive accomplishment in head coach PJ Fleck’s third year, regardless of strength of schedule.

Next Week: Maryland @ Minnesota (3:30pm on ESPN)

The Daily Nebraskan chimes in:

6. Minnesota Golden Gophers (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten)

Minnesota continued their perfect season with a 42-7 win against Rutgers. Quarterback Tanner Morgan threw two touchdown passes while running back Rodney Smith rushed for two scores. The Minnesota defense forced three turnovers and only gave up 189 total yards. The Golden Gophers play Maryland next.

Husker Extra chimes in:

3. MINNESOTA (7-0, 4-0)

Previous: 5. Last week: W 42-7 at Rutgers.

How about PJ Fleck’s team? Not that a win against Rutgers is much to write home, but the No. 17 Golden Gophers are the lone unbeaten team in the West and have everything in front of them. The going will undoubtedly get tougher, but Minnesota has outscored its last two opponents by a combined 76-14. Next, a home date against Maryland on Saturday before Penn State, Iowa, Northwestern and Wisconsin to close it out. How far can the Gophers ride this unbeaten streak?
