I didn’t see another thread like this.

Tom Segura ****ing killed it! 90% new material. First time at Northrop. Had a blast!

His stand up is best described as excruciating .

How about you keep politics out of the non-politics topics?

Minneapolis/Twin Cities has a pretty good comedy scene. I don't think anyone on here knows this, not even Costa or Ted, but I gave stand-up a go in my younger days. I would frequent The Corner Bar on Seven Corners. They had a small room set-up in the basement, called it Comedy Underground. I have no interest in ever giving it another go, but it's a fun scene in your mid-20s.

Wow. That is impressive. I imagine it very, very nerve racking.

I used to go to a club called the Funny Bone (Uptown) in the 90's. I saw a few comics bomb bad. I always felt really nervous for them.

I had one paying gig, which was paid in beer. The rest were all open mics. People are pretty forgiving at an open mic, especially Corner Bar which was mostly attended by other comics and the friends they drag along. Bar was set pretty low. Fun way to spend a Friday night, though.

I gave it a go in the 80s. It is terrifying, but when it works, it is great. Would not do again.

I’ve actually had paid gigs, including some at the Mall of America. Hard to come up with new stuff.

"What's the deal with mall food?"

LOL

I do not have the guts to try stand up. PJ would love it, you basically have to completely fail for years, and face total humiliation, and with enough determination, you eventually become good, and then 1% of the pool who get good ever have a worthwhile career. Fun stuff!

Mad respect to anyone who tries. Nokomis, give us a little flavor for your set.

Not only stand-up, but improv, too. Huge Theater has shows 6 nights a week, including an open jam on Thursdays. And Strike usually has a good schedule. And don’t forget old reliables like Dudley Rigg’s and Stevie Ray’s.

You got that right. I remember talking with a guy once, and he as like "I'd be really successful if I worked this hard at being like a realtor or something." I both admired and pitied him at the same time. I haven't seen Joker yet, but I imagine it strikes a nerve with a lot of comics. There's also an episode of the Twilight Zone reboot starring Tracy Morgan & Kumail Nanjiani that hits on this. The gist is that to be a success comic the audience eventually owns your entire personal life, and you can never get it back. Glad it was just a hobby for me.

I focused on self-deprecating observational humor. Also formed a musical-comedy duo with another guy that we modeled after the Smothers Brothers. We'd play a couple songs with some banter in between. We did a set at the Eagles Club in St. Paul once. The kids up front were having none of it. But we had the old Eagles guys at the back bar rolling.

You could be the next Gallagher with your schtick here. You're wasting all your talent.

I saw Gallagher once at a rural casino. Pretty rough and past his prime. GaG is way funnier.

What's the deal with Grape Nuts?

That's awesome. good for you, I bet that experience pays off in lots of ways.

GaG is like if a washed up Gallagher did Yakov Smirnov jokes.

U r surely correct with that assessment. On that long line we call the spectrum, I’m far nearer the ADD point than the OCD, and consequently my stuff is a bit scatter-brained and associative. As u well know, it never has seemed to resonate with the anal-retentive crowd. I don’t know what it is exactly, but I have to say I’ve never had any interest in numbering my toilet paper sheets, color-coding and indexing my shoelaces and condoms, or posting 40,000 obstinate entries on an anonymous forum. In fact, now that I think about it, I don’t believe I have ever been constipated! I’m afraid I just can’t relate, but I can accept our differences. The diversity of tOTB is also its strength. So please, think of this not as a rebuke, but simply an observation.
Btw, if you don’t mind my asking, at what age did mom finally finish the toilet training:confused:

DPO doesn't find you funny?

DPO loves me. He’s not anal-retentive; he’s meticulously accurate.

100% agree. My wife and I have been going to see The Bearded Men at Huge Improv for 5+ years now. Has us in stitches each time.

Long-form improv just resonates with me.

Well, you put a lot of effort into this long joke. That's about the nicest thing I can say.

Don’t just say something nice, say something interesting. About anything.

Yes or no, did you ever call Wren at his house & pretend to be Tim Brewster?
