Iowa president questions whether the annual Cy-Hawk game should continue

Crime (alleged), ergo take ball and go home. Solid crisis response.

I’m genuinely not sure how you (realistically) remove boorish, drunk, or abusive fans from attending games and pre-cog crimes before they happen outside of some dystopian Big Brother world where there’s a camera on every corner and in every hand, perhaps with facial recognition linked to profiling databases, security personnel exist every few feet in the lots and stands, dry campus, everyone gets a breathalyzer, or perhaps the extreme step of extralegal campus judicial systems to punish hapless accused resulting in a permanently ban from campus without due process...

Boo

I'd be pissed if I was a fan of either team. I know this would never happen because we are in the same conference but if Gabel threatened to not schedule Wisconsin anymore I could only imagine the reaction.

I bet the president will be getting quite a few letters and emails.

They could play the game somewhere other than Iowa.

Two drums and a cymbal fall off a cliff. I’ll be here all night folks.

They’ve only been playing each other since 1977 anyway.
Not long enough to be a rivalry by B1G standards. :pig:

I thought the game is required by Iowa law. The legislature passed something requiring them to play and Squawkeyes have whined ever since.

So typical of today's society. Have something happen, look at the incident and rather than realize it's an isolated incident act like it's everyone, create sweeping changes that are completely burdensome to everyone else, rinse and repeat. Why do we overreact to everything so extreme?

Take what, a century of football (edit only about 40 years but still a long time) and then try to quit it because some jackwagon assulted a band member? (Was there any derogatory stuff coming from the band?) Seems like a massive overreaction.

Objectively, If I am Iowa, I would not want to play this game every year.
This controversy would be the final nail in the coffin. What’s in it for Iowa to play ISU every year?

If I'm Iowa, I don't appreciate the game very much.

They should probably scale it back to every 2 or every 4 years.
That would be enough for most people's tastes.

Especially now with a 9 game conference schedule in the Big Ten. Iowa's non-conference choices really get limited with only two other options for non-conference.

This is likely a ploy by Iowa to get out of the game on purpose (at least have it go to a rotational series).

With the 9-game Big Ten schedule, and with the budgetary need for 7 home games every year, it is impossible to schedule any other Power 5 teams for Iowa. All they get is Iowa State. That would get old and it comes in a game that isn't a big boost outside of the state. Can you imagine never leaving the state for a non-conference game if you're a fan? I wouldn't like that. Same for ISU. I'd want some variety in non-conference game.

The series is signed through something like 2026. I'm guessing they're hoping to do something where they get a couple of years off. Maybe go to a rotation where they play for a two years and then don't play for two years.

Honestly, wouldn't be horrible to have the Gophers spill onto the ISU schedule on a couple of the years Iowa would roll off. Decent road trip, winnable road game vs. P5 team. Only downside is ISU wants to recruit Twin Cities heavily and maybe it wouldn't make sense to have them come up here from an exposure standpoint.

The fans like it... sports is an entertainment business.

Then why do we play the Dakota schools? I would much rather play ISU. you know that it would be a good chance to meet more fans that hate the Hawkeyes. [emoji1]

If I am Iowa, trying to pull away from that game is a mistake. It's good to have a rivalry like that.

I always thought that before Nebraska came to the big 10 the gophers should always try and schedule Nebraska, Iowa State, Kansas, Missouri, or Notre Dame, to home and away sets.
It's much more exciting than playing FCS, MAC, and Sunbelt Teams. And we can still get to those places in a one day drive.

Rivalries sometimes cause riot like behaviour. We've seen Iowa fans go crazy and commit crimes here too. Like the mob vandalizing the Metrodome, or the couple getting caught doing indecent acts in the Metrodome, etc...

If they use this excuse, it's more like they only want one less chance for them to commit a crime in Iowa, and would rather export that crime to our state...[emoji2962]

I don't think they will quit the series altogether. I think they'd prefer to make it a rotational thing.

Never playing a non-conference game outside of Iowa would get old.

That's what Iowa is facing, playing only FCS, MAC, Sun Belt buy games, and Iowa State. That's it.

The Big XII also has a 9 game conference schedule.

It would be a chance for both schools to have a P5 non-conference team not called Iowa or Iowa St on the home schedule.

I think that chopping those non Power 5 foes off the schedule would be a better option than a built in instate rival.
I guess we disagree, but I would think that fans would buy more tickets and tune in to more games against Power 5 foes.

The cupcakes have not been very cupcake like for us lately though. So that might color my judgement.

I don't think you're understanding the situation. It isn't an either/or. As long as there are 9 Big Ten games, Iowa cannot chop off the non-Power 5 games while also continuing to play Iowa State.

They have to play two buy games against FCS, Sun Belt, MAC every year.

If they push ISU off the schedule, they would still play two buy games, but they would also get to play OTHER P5 schools.

Basically, each Big Ten team that requires 7 home games is in this boat (Minnesota included). You play the road P5 non-conference game when you have five B1G home games, and host the non-conference P5 game when you play four B1G home games. Minnesota gets to vary it from year to year. Iowa doesn't get that option. It has been Iowa State every year.

So, while Minnesota gets home-home with Oregon State, Colorado, Mississippi State, Fresno State, Colorado State, BYU, North Carolina, TCU, UNLV, USC, Cal, etc.

Iowa gets home-home with Iowa State, Iowa State, Iowa State, Iowa State, Iowa State, Iowa State, Iowa State, Iowa State, Iowa State, Iowa State, Iowa State and Iowa State.

See how that would get old? Plus it is a lack of national exposure. I'm glad we get to travel to new places every couple of years.

I can’t see the CyHawk series ending. The president of Iowa can’t just do nothing in the wake of the incidents. His position requires him to say something. That Iowa’s band got hassled to this degree shows that security was too lax. I expect the schools to come up with a beefed up security plan to ensure this doesn’t happen again and the series will continue.

The whole purpose of college sports is to play in huge games. How does it hurt Iowa?

It seems like it would be a fun game for the players, fans, and potential recruits.

In all fairness, it's a lot easier to dismiss or downplay the situation when it doesn't directly involve you or your team.

If the Gopher band went to a game, and band members were reporting assaults, injuries, racial slurs, etc, I suspect the reaction on this board would be slightly different.

but back to the bigger picture - fan behavior is an issue. Where do you draw the line between letting the fans have fun, and cracking down when the fun gets out of hand? (enter Dean Wormer - "No More Fun of Any Kind!") I would go back to my Mom - if someone gets hurt, that's where the fun stops.

The two schools have to investigate the allegations. If it can be proven that any ISU students harassed or assaulted Iowa Band members, they should face legal charges and/or school discipline.

There is no rule that says "They have to play two buy games against FCS, Sun Belt, MAC every year." Can go Home and Home vs MTN West Team. Also they played Pitt in 2014 & 2015 with the 9 game BT schedule, though it may have been on the docket beforehand.

I like to think I would at least expect some evidence.

I mean the bus windows rumor went on a long time and nobody had a picture of it? The cops didn't report it / nobody told them? That was not the least bit believable.

At least if we were this far out from the event as far as the timeline goes and nobody in the Gopher band reported anything to the cops, I think I'd be pretty skeptical about any rumor.

As an explanation, not an excuse, for the behavior of certain Cyclones fans, the game had a three hour weather delay that probably felt much longer to the people waiting it out. Then the full game was played with the Hawkeyes winning. It probably took already intense feelings and turned them up several notches. Throw in alcohol and the mob mentality and you get whatever occurred.

I won’t knock Iowa for wanting something done to make sure there’s no repeat of the incident. As was noted, if our band went to Iowa City or Madison and such a thing happened, Gophers fans would be out for blood while demanding an official reaction from the U of M.

I still don’t think the CyHawk series is in any true danger. The threat to end it was a way to spur action. Both sets of fans want the games played and the money is too good to pass up. It’s not like taking out the Cyclones to replace them with Cal or Virginia would garner more revenue for Iowa. That game is probably a bigger spur for ticket and suite sales than us or Nebraska.

I think Iowa needs to be careful not to end up looking bad in this whole thing. The Iowa State AD and Ames chief of police said they're looking at the following five items:

1. Beer thrown at a band member - Never cool, but I would certainly argue that it's not terribly unusual. An away football game is not necessarily a safe space.

2. Bottle thrown at football team bus - This apparently caused a crack in the windshield. Again, not cool, but nobody around at the time and nothing to do with the band.

3. Argument between Iowa band director and the ISU facilities director - This apparently stems from two things: The facilities director angry that the Iowa band was on a wet field potentially causing damage (natural grass) and the Iowa band going out the wrong stadium exit (the one they were supposed to exit was mostly clear, the one they went through was jam packed with fans).

4. An Iowa band member attempting to get into the football facilities building and being denied by security - WTH are you trying to do?

5. An Iowa band member being shoved by a fan and falling into another band member carrying a ladder, causing an injury to ribs - certainly the most serious. However...

It's interesting that no Iowa fan has come forward to offer witness. It's interesting that no Iowa State fan has come forward to offer witness. It's interesting that no video of #5 exists, which is hard to believe in this day and age. And it's interesting that no police report has been filed, which is bizarre if anything like an assault actually happened. It's hard to take this seriously.

I was actually at the game, and left through that very exit at the same time the band was leaving. Not that my small sphere of observation is proof of much, but I didn't see or hear anything.

As of Monday no police report had been filed per article (sorry no link). I had read elsewhere somebody had been pushed down a stairs...so the whole thing has a bit of an urban legend feel to it. No video at all despite numerous Iowa fans in attendance, etc. Regarding the bolded the delayed trip for medical assessment combined with a lack of complaints to the police escort the day of the game (the alleged sex assault also), a lack of willingness to go on record about an apparently relatively minor injury (member performed, marched, rode home) is just very, very odd and sorry but some part of me still doesn’t quite buy (all) the claims at face value..but I’m certainly willing to offer I could be wrong. My bs meter is still ringing.

One would think there are photos of the cracked window?

One side effect of filing police report regarding the physical assault is verification of injury site probably via direct inspection or medical records review or both. This could aid in terms of any future lawsuits vs ISU, etc which surely are brewing.

Online there's talk that the band was swinging their instruments around and such (funny how we hear about it now... but not before), did you see any of that?

https://youtu.be/KvNas_K24Fw. The incident.

They decided to parade through there 6 across, swinging their instruments around and then got upset because they weren't being well recieved by the fans around them. Idiots.
