What a football game. Down four points late in the fourth quarter, Tanner Morgan and the Golden Gophers were able to drive down the field and score a last-minute touchdown to avoid the upset against Georgia Southern. Tyler Johnson’s third touchdown of the game put the Gophers up 35-32 where the team was able to hold on and finish the non-conference schedule 3-0.

The bye week for Minnesota comes at the perfect time as the team came out of the Saturday’s game banged up on both ends of the ball. A week off heading into the Big Ten schedule will be just what Fleck and the Gophers need before they travel to Purdue University for a battle with the Boilermakers.

Here are a couple of key stats from Saturday’s win over the Eagles.

140: Tyler Johnson’s last catch of the game put him at 140 yards on 10 receptions for the game. His three-touchdown day was the third of Johnson’s career.

93: Although the run game seems to be the Gophers bread and butter, the Eagles were able to contain Minnesota to just 93 rushing yards on 48 total attempts on Saturday afternoon. Rodney Smith led the team with 57 yards rushing before he had to leave the game with an injury. Cam Wiley also debuted in this game and had 37 yards before he was sidelined with an injury in the second half.

10: Georgia Southern ended the game with ten total penalties, including two for illegal substitution in the second half that came at detrimental times for the Sun Belt squad. Minnesota ended the game with four total penalties for 45 yards.

289: Tanner Morgan finished the game with 289 passing yard and three touchdowns--all to Johnson. Morgan’s second pass of the game was intercepted but Tanner bounced back after that, completing 19 of his last 29 passes.

5: The Gophers offensive line allowed five sacks in the victory along with 11 tackles for loss. This will be a stat the team has to improve on going forward if Minnesota wants to continue its winning streak into the Big Ten season.

123: On defense, the Gophers allowed just 123 rushing yards on 33 attempts against the Eagles triple-option offense.

37:55: The Gophers were able to control the ball for almost 38 minutes on Saturday, due to many extended drives on third down. Minnesota completed 50-percent of its third-down conversions (7-of-14) and held Georgia Southern to just two third-down completions on nine attempts.

1: The Gophers have one extremely important bye week ahead of the September 28th game against Purdue on the road. The team rallied around each other through the non-conference schedule and were able to walk away with three important victories.
