Really thrown off by this. How often does this happen? Is it that more beneficial due to the 2 hour time difference and 7:30 kickoff?
I just can't imagine the pros really outweighing, flying in on game day to flying out the night before that much. Feel like too many things could go wrong flying out just hours before game time. Just me?

Can't think of any positives for doing this.

Seems strange.

AZ flew into Hawaii the day of the game, their police escort wasn't there ... they were a bit behind schedule, and they proceeded to suck ass and lose.

Seems like after a long plain ride your odds of being ready aren't better...

Not worried about this at all. Coach Fleck seemed confident in their approach and claimed it was the same way he did it at WMU and his first season at MN (Oregon St).
Don't let the circumstances dictate your behavior, gentlemen.

PJ's not likely to say This is horrible! I can't belive we're doing this!

You also shouldn't put yourself in bad circumstances.

Clearly an effort to avoid that oppressive and mind-bending heat in Fresno that the players would never encounter anywhere in Minnesota.

I have been hoping this trip to the west coast ends up going like the 2017 trip to Oregon State. Did the Gophers fly out on Saturday for that one? If so, okay. If not, yikes - I don't like this either. It is stuff like this where I fear Fleck can get a little too "cute" with things at times.

obviously not the same thing by a long shot but it at least reminds me of something my HS coach did my senior year. We were the heavy favorites for a game against a conference rival that was just a 15 minute drive away. For some reason, unlike any other game I ever played in, coach decided to do warm ups on our own field and then bus to the away game, to arrive 10 minutes before kick off. I guess it was to psych out the opponent but it was a disaster. Pouring rain and ankle deep water. Underdog opponent won the game 0-3 on a last second field goal in the mud/rain. We were absolutely embarrassed and the whole "surprise" arrival just made it worse. I get it that Fleck might not be going for a surprise/drama, but just doing it this way makes it seem like he is out-thinking himself for some reason.

I don't think this is correct. He said they were flying out early in the afternoon, but he clearly meant Friday, not Saturday. Fifteen seconds later he was talking about sleeping in a different bed and that it wasn't a big deal since many of them just moved anyway. When he says they are staying on Central time, he just means that they will follow their same routine and not try to adjust their body clocks. Did the same at Oregon State. There is no way that they would try to fly game day. What if the flight was delayed?

Yes, Fleck said they did the same thing for the Oregon St game. We won 48-14 with Connor Rhoda at QB. Yes, Oregon St sucked, but so did we that season.

That would be great news.

I just watched the press conference. I’m pretty sure they’re flying out early Saturday afternoon by the way he described it.

I guess we'll see, but they stay overnight in Madison and Iowa City, even when they fly there. It does not seem likely to me that they are going to forego a walk through on the field and risk a forfeit by flying out "early afternoon" on Saturday.

It wasn't clear. He definitely talked about staying over night. Just not sure if that was Friday or Saturday. But I'd guess Friday. And I'd guess they go home after the game Saturday to have Sunday all day to rest.

I can't handle this whipsawing of events!

It's like when my parents got divorced all over again!!!!!

Can't someone just track PJ's cell phone now? PJ's Twitter doesn't say where he is ...

Does PJ have to bring the plane back with a full tank of gas?

Early Saturday afternoon here is late morning there. They leave here at 1:30 PM and get in there around 3 PM local time.

Haven't watched the press conference but not surprised that this is a case of someone misunderstanding what was said. Teams have a very regimented routine for road trips and there is no way they would forego all of that and risk something going wrong to travel on gameday.

Would have been absolutely shocked to find out we were leaving on Saturday, it just isn't done.

Well generally you don't want to land with a full tank of gas...

It was meant to be a joke. Reference to Pitino getting dinged for not returning a rental car with a full tank on a recruiting trip.
