Fresno fans on the backboard seem to be convinced they will have a huge advantage based on the weather for this game so for the past 5 or 6 days, I've been checking the forecast for this game.

As of today, the high on Saturday will be 91 degrees with a humidity of 39% and NW wins of 15 MPH. Since the game is being played at 7:30, there has been usually been a drop of around 5-6 degrees from the high to 7:30 and 15-16 degrees by 11:00 PM when the game should end. So that means it should be 86-76 degrees for the duration of the game.
I think thats pretty good considering on Sunday the projected high was 96 which means it would have been 90-91 degrees kickoff. Having a low humidity will help reduce cramps and I would think and having 15 MPH winds should be nice as well.

Overall I'm not as concerned as I was a few days ago and Fleck has said they have been practicing in the indoor cranking the heat up in the 80's and have started working on their hydration.

Weather can be a bigger issue for practices than for games. Northern teams have the advantage this time of year. If you're Florida, Bama, LSU, etc, the heat and humidity limits what you can do in practices. Up here in the north, not a problem.

Don't know what the base of the field is but I expect the field will absorb a lot of heat during the day. That won't help.

I never lose much sleep over the weather conditions because both teams have to deal with the same thing. When the weather is "extreme" one way or the other neither team has an advantage based on where their team plays football. It all comes down to the individual players and how they deal with the weather, some players fall apart in bad conditions and others thrive.

Wasn't under PJ Fleck, but the team has traveled to warm spots before and they've done alright, like the games in Nevada and New Mexico. I think they'll be in good shape.

Thanks for posting. The weather stuff can be a factor and it is good to hear that in a game with plenty to worry about, it sounds like the game-time temps won't have to be part of that concern.

It would be amusing to see someone try to argue that a given coach... somehow isn't comparable with some types of weather ;)

Usually in dry CA when temps dip suddenly in the hot months that indicates monsoonal moisture roiling up from Baja, ie dew point is up which is much, much worse than a dry heat IMO for outdoor activities. I’m not saying weather will be a factor and I’m not a weather guy and sure how sticky it will be - probably not that bad -but the temp is only part of the equation. It will likely be warm/mildly sticky and hydration may be a factor for some even though it’s a night game.

I've learned from MTSU fans that it isn't the heat, it's the humidity. In MN, we never have humidity, so a low humidity game should not be a challenge.

Projected high went down from 91 to 90. That means kickoff should be 85-84 or so.

Not that it really matters as it is what it is, but I believe the exact opposite is true. When the dewpoint (humidity) is high, temps dont drop as much as they dont drop below the dewpoint (otherwise fog). In places like Arizona or desert CA, when the dewpoint and humidity are really low, the temp drops dramatically and rapidly after the sun sets (easily 20 - 30 degrees). Maybe GopherWeatherGuy can confirm one way or the other.

Practice indoors?

I'm pretty sure that's a recipe for an earthquake.

I experience this regularly and train in the weather and understand how different temp/dewpoint combos feel. You are right right that temp drops much more quickly after sunset when it is dry. The air temp is a little more stubborn to rise or drop with moist air.

Either way it’s not going to be a huge factor but it probably won’t be “ideal” temps and it may affect some players.

According to Fleck in yesterday's press conference, they won't be there for very long.
They are staying on Central Time, leaving early afternoon Saturday, get there, play the game.
He also said this week they have been taking care of hydration, so I assume the team will be prepared.
The weather shouldn't be an issue.

Hopefully the escort to get tot he game shows up.

The week 0 Hawaii game almost had to be pushed back because AZ landed and didn't have a police escort / almost didn't make it to the game to start on time.

Asking someone to get off a plane after a 4-hour flight and immediately go play a football game (when your body thinks it's 9:30 PM, nonetheless) seems really stupid to me.

I'm inclined to agree.

Gopher Fan here who lives 30 minutes away from Fresno. I have to say that we are lucky that the weather is only supposed to be 92 on Game Day. A week ago, we had 5 straight days of over 101.We are having a very mild summer in our area believe it or not. Keep in mind, the hottest part of the day here in the Central Valley is late afternoon. So it will be around 90 around game time.

I also heard that Fleck said we are flying to Fresno the day of the game...that can't be true is it? That really scares me.

The projected high is 90 on Saturday so it will be around 85 at kickoff.

completely agree. I'd much prefer to fly in even at midnight the previous night.

I think only GA and FL were without until relatively recently in SEC?

Maybe, but still seems odd given the very warm climates in those areas. Then again, I’ve aware youth teams practice in 105+ degree heat in the hotter areas of CA (usually after sun down). Acclimation is a real thing.

I actually disagree, here's why.

1. They won't be able to adjust to the timezone. You need 2 or 3 days to adjust, and they are going to classes. Can't pull them out of classes this early for those days to travel there, so you're staying home through at least Friday. Also can't go onto "Pacific Time" at home due to aforementioned classes and practices.
2. If you fly Friday evening/Early Saturday morning (red-eye), you ruin their sleep quality the night before. Even if you manage to fly Friday afternoon and are at a hotel you still risk bad sleep. I don't know about y'all, but no matter where I travel, my first night is always sleepless.

Since the players won't adjust to the timezone anyway, I would much rather try to get them the best night's sleep at home the day before the game. Then they can have a low-key morning and continue to rest on the plane if needed.

Minnesota will get to break in our new field just installed by AstroTurf this summer.
Here is a brief video showcasing the new stadium turf and gives you a panoramic view of the stadium.
Fresno has a bowl stadium set below the berm so it can get warm on the playing surface on hot days.

100% agreed.
Don't let the circumstances dictate your behavior.

I never have any problem with jet lag flying west. But I'm always stiff and a little tired after flying. Just for me personally, I'd be better off getting in around 11pm, getting 6 hours. Eating breakfast and then taking a nap. And then get into your routine. Everyone's different, and knowing PJ, I'm sure they have plenty of data on what works best.
