Athlon first out of the gate:

South Dakota State at Minnesota (Thursday)

South Dakota State opens the campaign ranked third in Athlon's FCS Preseason Power Poll, so this is a dangerous matchup for Minnesota. After winning four out of their last six games in 2018, the Golden Gophers are a trendy sleeper pick to win the Big Ten West Division. Receiver Tyler Johnson might be one of the most underrated players in college football, but quarterback play is under the spotlight after Zack Annexstad was lost for the year, giving the starting job back to Tanner Morgan.

Prediction: Minnesota

Go Gophers!!

To me, "giving the starting job back to Tanner Morgan" is either incorrect or poorly phrased.

The starter had not been named at the time Zach went down... unless I missed an announcement.

Incidentally, vegasinsider shows the line on the game moving from Minnesota -12.5 to Minnesota -14.

I agree that the statement about giving the starting job back to TM is incorrect or poorly phrased. I also think that its a dangerous match-up. Go Gophers!

These kind of matchups are always dangerous when you go up against a high level FCS team. We should be able to physically overwhelm them but they have talent and if you let them hang around things can get dicey in a hurry. Hopefully we come out fast and get up early so that they never get that glimmer of hope that allows them to stay in the game.

Rabbits are dangerous, but I'm hopeful we're past days of losing to FCS schools.

I think it'll be close at half and we'll start to pull away in second half

Our big uglies will beat them down in the first half the then we really roll. We have depth and playmakers that most Gopher fans have not adjusted to seeing in Maroon and Gold. That statement isn't so outrageous. ZA would have been the starter. They are so close that it doesn't matter if TM stays healthy. The team had no problem adjusting to TM when he took over and he is getting the reps now to make a big jump and he was pretty dog gone good.

Final Analysis

South Dakota State is a more than formidable foe for Minnesota's season opener. In past years, I would have felt comfortable calling the upset without a second thought. Heading into 2019, however, P.J. Fleck has built up his roster — particularly in the trenches on both sides of the ball — to the point where the Gophers should be able to dominate any FCS team up front.

Once that dominance is established in the trenches, look for the Gophers to start lighting up the scoreboard with the clear advantage they have at the skill positions.

Prediction: Minnesota 45, South Dakota State 20

Saturday Blitz chimes in:

Prediction
This is a very tough Week 1 test for the Golden Gophers, as South Dakota State will likely come out to play with nothing to lose. And they really do have nothing to lose. Playing up a division, expect plenty of unexpected plays out of the Jackrabbit offense as they try to overcome the mighty Big Ten.

Final Score: South Dakota State 33, Minnesota 35

I'd really question our defense if that's the result

Feels weird to agree with Athlon on anything but this is how I see this game going as well if we play the way we are capable of playing.

It's awfully hard to score when your offense isn't on the field...

Campus Insiders chimes in:

Prediction
A loss for Minnesota would be devastating here. It takes away everything we thought we knew about this team heading into the year. It seems highly unlikely, however. South Dakota State will compete for an FCS championship this year, but they won’t beat the Gophers. MINNESOTA 34 SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 17

Go Gophers!!

These are the type of games we win at the LOS. Turnovers could kill us.

Golden Gophers 38
SDSU. 16

its not that hard
I am predicting at least 1 defensive score this game and 3-5 total turn overs

I agree with you. I'm not sure you understood my post. Minnesota will be dominating TOP.

NJ.com chimes in:

South Dakota State (+13) at Minnesota, 9: This could get tricky for the Golden Gophers. The Jackrabbits are a preseason top-5 FCS squad coming off a trip to the national semifinals a year ago. SDSU is 1-8 all-time against FBS opponents (it beat Kansas in 2015) but it has been competitive in several of those contests, including a three-point loss at Minnesota in 2009. Pick: Minnesota.
