Gopher land big time PWO transfer Noah Carlson

Will he be counted as a 2019 PWO?

How many years of eligibility does he have?

This pleases me a lot. Noah Carlson is a heck of a football player and I was hoping the Gophers would recruit him out of high school.

Would have to think he would be immediately eligible to play and if he is the same age as TJ he can't much left in terms of eligibility. Will be interesting to see what the staff has planned for him, maybe a kick returner?

How does he compare to Jason Williamson?

I think they're separated by a year or two. Tyler didn't play in the Prep Bowl linked above - he had already graduated.

My understanding was that eligibility was on a per-sport basis. So he should have 4 years of football remaining.

Yes, but very unlikely he’ll get to use all those. His five year clock started when he enrolled at Michigan, looks like fall 2017. So should have three seasons remaining (including this season). Would need waiver to extend clock one year, which is usually only granted for hardship (not transfer).

Hasn’t played since high school, no spring ball, summer workouts, or fall camp. Doubt he sees the field much this season unless we’re devastated by injuries. 2020 and 2021 will be his chance to contribute, if he works hard and sticks with it.

Nice! Maybe he’ll be a kick return specialist. It’s not going to be easy this year, next year, or the year after to break into the lineup. I don’t know much about him, but he’s likely not the fastest guy on the team anymore. I hope he surprises.

Just read that he will be ineligible this year due to NCAA transfer rules and will be able to start playing in 2020 (but can practice with team this year).

Makes sense... I mean it is hard to immediately eligible. Cough, cough Justin Fields, Tate Martell, Jalen Hurts, etc

Don't put Hurts in with that group. He busted his butt off to graduate in 3 years.

He did it the right way. A Grad Transfer.

Interesting, would think that as a walk on he would be eligible right away but don't pretend to know all the ins and outs of the transfer process. Probably not a big deal either way since he has not been playing football for a while but odd that the transfer rule would apply to someone coming from a different sport and paying their own way.

I stand corrected. I can only imagine all the late nights studying in the library to get through the University of Alabama in 3 years as the starting QB...

I would agree. Maybe it’s a Big Ten rule that applies generally to any variety athlete transferring to any varsity team at another school within the conference.

He did do it the right way but are we going to pretend that they went their to play school? (Cardale jones quote)

per the Post Bulletin:

Carlson was just as impressive in track and field. As a junior, Carlson won state titles in the 200, long jump and triple jump and flirted with the triple jump state record. He was sidelined with a hamstring injury to close out his senior track and field season.

Carlson debated whether to pursue track and field or football at the college level. The 6-feet-2, 185-pounder settled on track and field after considering the injuries he’d sustained in football.

"Football was something I definitely had some thinking to do about, especially after the past season that I had," Carlson said in an interview in March of 2017, after choosing Michigan and track and field. "But I think back to the injuries (he's had) and decided I was better off taking it easy on my body."

Now, it’s going to be football after all. Thompson said that Carlson missed the camaraderie of the game.

“He missed the team part of it,” Thompson said. “Not that there aren't team things in track and field. But he missed being on a football team.”

Carlson, who was unavailable for this story, figures to be either a wide receiver or a defensive back at Minnesota.
