All Things 2019 Gophers Fall Camp Thread

per Chip:

One of Ciarrocca’s strengths lies in his ability to adapt his scheme to fit his personnel, and then improvising when needed. He didn’t run wildcat formation at Western Michigan but added that to his playbook to take advantage of Seth Green’s unique skill set. Green’s role became more prominent after running back Rodney Smith suffered a season-ending knee injury in the second game.

Ciarrocca initially planned to use Green only in short yardage and goal-line situations. He ended up with 76 carries and eight rushing touchdowns last season as a change-of-pace option at wildcat.

“When Rodney got hurt, in between series, I was just thinking, ‘OK, what do I do now?’ ” Ciarrocca said. “I was like, ‘Well let’s use a little bit more wildcat and see how it goes.’ It was effective for us. How will that fit into this year? It’s part of our package, but I don’t know yet. We’re still developing our identity.”

Ciarrocca plans to expand his playbook, because his talent and experience warrant that. An offense built around Johnson, Smith, Mohamed Ibrahim, Shannon Brooks and Rashod Bateman lends itself to creativity.

The man charged with orchestrating it is happy with his decision to stay put.

“Once I got off the phone with P.J., I went right to sleep,” Ciarrocca said. “And it was probably the best sleep I had in about seven or eight days. Once I make a decision, I don’t look back.”

per Megan:

Kicker competition

Fleck hasn’t made a decision on starting kicker yet, but he does seem to have it narrowed down to two. Freshman Brock Walker sank a 47-yard field goal to end practice Monday, Fleck said, while freshman Michael Lantz kicked a 54-yarder in a two-minute drill Sunday. Walker, a redshirt last year, has been around the team for a year while Lantz is still new.

Fleck didn’t specifically mention fellow new addition Michael Tarbutt, a graduate transfer with 29 games of experience at UConn.

“We’re going to need all of them,” Fleck said. “We have a lot of guys that can do one thing really well. We don’t have [graduated kicker] Emmit Carpenter, who just did everything or us. It’s going to be a little bit by committee and by job.”

Go Gophers!!

per Greder:

Briefly

Receiver Rashod Bateman and wildcat quarterback Seth Green participated in Monday’s practice after missing Friday’s session for individual personal reasons. ... Chris Autman-Bell and Brevyn Spann-Ford had one-handed catches in the corner of the end zone in one-on-one drills with defensive backs. “If you’re gonna do it, you better come down with it,” Fleck said. ... Quarterback Zack Annexstad has a blue cast on his injured right foot after surgery last week. He has begun a rehab schedule that could keep him out until December. ... Walk-on John Santaga has switched positions from quarterback to running back during camp.

Open practice tomorrow.

Looking forward to reports from anyone going to today's open practice.

I'm heading down. Assuming 4:15 is still the start time. Any guesses on when practice will end?

Two hours...Monday was a bit less. Wonder if having BTN there will extend practice...

Interested to see how Clark is looking. I think we might need him to win a few games.

Fleck is on KFAN right now.

Sounds like Nubin is ahead of Howden and Sapp in the battle for the other safety spot. Fleck called him “special,” and went on to talk about a ridiculous catch he made yesterday. After hearing that, I’ll be shocked if Nubin isn’t the starter for game #1

Makes sense given his 247 eval:

Will step on a college campus ready to compete from a size and strength standpoint. Excellent length in addition to his height and build. Will use that size and be physical with receivers at the line of scrimmage and redirect them. While he has not burned up stop watches as far as his 40 time, he has shown recovery ability and enough quickness to stay with smaller slot type receivers. Has experience at receiver and exhibits good ball skills, that is not only in terms of his hands, but ability to challenge passes and bat away what he does not intercept. At this point, he is probably more comfortable with press-man than off-man. He has improved as a tackler as his high school career has gone on, and with his size and strength, run support should be one of his strengths. Safety is a possibility, but as it stands, he projects as a big cover corner.

Only showed a 4.7x 40 time in his profile, but definitely a big frame.

Sounding like Schlueter’s job to lose at LT.

Good to hear Nubin’s favorite to parnter AWjr. Way too talented to redshirt and could be a really solid 4 year starter for us. Gotta feel good about a Terrell Smith, Chris Williamson, Nubin, Winfield Jr and Durr secondary. Still some questions about depth but that’s a pretty talented group.

First question and most important question. Who is Winfield's back up?

Howden or Benny Sapp from the sounds of it. Pretty thin back there unless they want to burn a redshirt. Maybe they’d move Williamson to safety if that happened with St-Juste impressing on the outside apparently in Fall Camp.

Thought Kramer looked better than him overall at practice today.
They did QB drill about avoiding the rush and Clark seemed to struggle with it the most. He was being hit by flying pads on every rep, while Morgan hardly ever was hit and Kramer did a little bit.
