All Things 2019 Gophers Fall Camp Thread

Thanks! I really think they have a decision to make at starting RB, or maybe they just list both as starters. Mo has looked fantastic and Rodney has not taken a scrimmage snap in the couple practices I have attended.

I think it makes most sense to give Mo the bulk of the carries at least early on. For one he might be the best RB and for two you can ease Rodney back.

I don’t know, have to think if the seniors are full go they’ll try to save the wear and tear on Mo to some extent this year and besides, they are really good backs. Next year the options outside of Mo are a question mark at this point, until proven otherwise. Besides the Potts, Wiley, Williams options the kid from Kansas, Ky, looks really good and could possibly be an option from day one in a very important 2020 season.

I'm expecting them to limit play for Smith and Brooks during NC unless they are really needed, in hopes to prevent any season-ending injuries in NC to either of them, so that our 3 headed beast of a RB corp is all healthy for Big Ten play.

Sorry if already posted but does anyone know the date when the BTN crew will be in town to preview our squad? Thanks in advance.

Sounds (and looks) like Morgan and his receivers are getting their timing down. I have a feeling he’s going to have a good year....as long as he plays within himself, and doesn’t try to force things.

Highlight clips from today’s practice:

End zone fade to Bateman, I think...

Slant to Tyler...

Deep ball to Douglas...

Spiral - check. Deep ball 35+ yards - check. I’m pretty excited to see TM2 in year 2. This offense has the potential to be incredible.

Was at practice...believe the end zone fade was to TJ. Morgan was sharp. I was standing by the drink table and he walked right up by me...he's a little shorter than me and I'm 6'1" (sorry, had to go there...).

First time I've seen Rodney take snaps in scrimmage...not full pads today though. He looks great. Wiley is impressive. Definitely think he'll get carries...and some throws, good set of hands.

Ah...thanks for clarification. They both have similar leaping and ball skills, so it’s hard to tell from a distance without being able to see the number on the jersey.

So...Morgan is about Drew Brees size.

Correct. Kramer is a bit shorter than Morgan (again...sorry). I know I've said this before, but the way Fleck runs his practices is outstanding...one might even say elite.

Someone I know met Drew Brees once. They said he is short.
From that I would get TM is actually taller than Drew Brees.

Appreciate the update again!

About Baker Mayfield size too. He measured 6’ 5/8”.

His combine height was 5’ 10 5/8”

That’s pretty short.

Most places I looked at have him listed at 5'11", so maybe right in between is more accurate. I would peg Morgan at just under 6' or right at 6'.

In some ways, I kind of get it.

Andries looks really good in space and I think is likely a better G than a T. So while you might be upgrading LT, I think you're downgrading the guard spot by moving him.

You might be right

Same height as Fran Tarkenton. The Scrambler.

Wasn't there our biggest scrimmage of fall camp yesterday? Was it completely closed to the media and no availability afterward? Odd that there are no updates or notes anywhere

per Sid:

There have been few players who embody the best aspects of the Gophers better than senior linebacker Carter Coughlin.

Not only does he have a huge family connection to the university, but his ties to Eden Prairie — the best high school football program in the state — showcase the kind of success the Gophers want to have at the collegiate level.

And the family ties to the university will continue for some time with his cousin Cole Kramer, who also played at Eden Prairie, joining the club this season as a freshman quarterback. Bud Grant, the former Vikings head coach and father of Eden Prairie head coach Mike Grant, said Kramer is the best prep quarterback he has ever seen.

On top of the family ties, Coughlin is one of the most highly touted players in recent history for the Gophers.

He is a preseason All-America according to analyst Phil Steele, he was named to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which honors the best defensive player in college football, and he was recently awarded an Academic All-Big Ten designation.

Coughlin said his desire to do great things for the Gophers started with his grandfather.

“We have Grandpa [Tom] Moe starting it off, obviously he played football here, played baseball here, was the AD here, as well,” Coughlin said. “He is someone that just absolutely loves sports, loves competition, all of that stuff.

“My dad [Bob Coughlin] played football here, then my mom Jenny Moe, now Jenny Coughlin, is a Hall of Fame tennis player here. My uncle Mike Moe played football here, as well. And now me and my cousin Cole Kramer are on the football team here. So the family bloodline runs deep in Minnesota.”

per Megan:

This school year, wide receiver Rashod Bateman is rooming with three teammates who also joined the Gophers last season: quarterback Zack Annexstad and offensive linemen Daniel Faalele and Curtis Dunlap Jr.

Considering Annexstad and Bateman’s combined weight is only one book-stuffed backpack more than Faalele alone, Bateman’s feeling pretty comfortable with his surroundings.

“We’ll be well-protected,” joked Bateman, a 6-2 Georgia native who set freshman records while starting every game last season.

While it’s in offensive linemen’s nature to guard their teammates, Bateman shouldn’t overlook his own contribution to defending their home, should the place somehow come under siege. Gophers coach P.J. Fleck has touted the sophomore’s physical transformation all offseason.

Bateman said when he arrived on campus a year ago, he weighed 173 pounds. The roster currently lists him at 210 pounds, though he put himself more around 201 pounds at the start of camp.

How he managed to put on about 30 pounds was a pretty simple formula: stay in the weight room, rework his diet. The latter was what he had to change “a lot.”

“I wasn’t eating too healthy before,” Bateman said. “Just, like, a lot of fried food. I never ate salad.”

Greens and protein shakes seem to be the substitutes now for Bateman’s crunchy cravings. And it has Fleck, a former receiver himself, fired up for a follow-up to a strong freshman campaign, when Bateman set first-year school records of 51 catches and 704 receiving yards, along with his six touchdowns. Paired with then-junior receiver Tyler Johnson, the Gophers receiving corps has engineered much hype for 2019.

“Everybody talks about Tyler, but we’re talking about — Rashod Bateman set every Minnesota freshman record there was, and now he’s 200 pounds,” Fleck said. “And you’re talking about maybe one of the best and most-prolific wide receivers in the country [in Johnson, who’s] going to be just like Corey Davis was. They have very similar skill sets.”
