Banks: P.J. Fleck Looks to Bring Back Gopher Glory Days of Half-Century Ago

I can’t remember where I saw it, but Rashod Bateman said his goal is to win the national championship....this year.

Chip said 8 wins for this season: 7 regular season and 1 bowl win.

His article clearly said "season", not "regular season". So that includes a bowl win.

As I pointed out yesterday - the article didn’t mention “season” or “regular season”.

I can now add that I heard Chip on KFAN just now and he stated 8-4 or 9-3. I’ll try to let him know he is being unreasonable.

We have people here predicting 11-1, 12-0, so the 7 win people are necessary to balance things out. I don’t think 8-9 is unreasonable.

This is true. Opinions/predictions on a message board. I don’t know if any opinion is unreasonable. I’m thinking 10-2 today.

Has a 7-6 team ever gone on to win the natty the next year?

I don't know the answer, and I'm too lazy to look it up right now.

Here's one: Did anyone ever walk on the moon before Neil Armstrong?

How about: Did anybody ever climb Everest before Edmund Hillary?

Think about it: Let's say the answer to the original question is "No; no team has done it before." Doesn't that make the accomplishment all the more amazing?

In that scenario, Minnesota would have accomplished something that Alabama, Oklahoma, Nebraska, USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas et al had never done.

Why not us?

I don’t know, but the Minnesota Golden Gophers topped that more than once.

1939 3-4-1
1940 8-0 National Champions
1941 8-0 National Champions

1957 4-5
1958 1-8
1959 2-7
1960 8-2 National Champions

Thanks for posting this.

Maybe Minnesotans in the 30s, 40s and 50s had more of a can-do spirit than us modern Minnesotans.

How about....

Clemson

1980 6-5
1981 12-0 National Champions

So far, I’ve checked Minnesota, Clemson and Auburn, who was 8-5 in 2009 and won the national championship with a record of 14-0 in 2010.

There are probably other examples. Maybe I’ll check later when I have more time.
