per Mills:

A week later, Minnesota visits Kinnick to try to take back Floyd of Rosedale for the first time since 2014. The Gophers’ competitiveness in the rivalry is rising in the third season of head coach P.J. Fleck — the power index projects Minnesota having a 37.2 percent chance to win, even in the tough Kinnick atmosphere.

Iowa firmly snared the victory over Minnesota last season, 48-31 in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Then-freshman quarterback Zack Annexstad threw 3 interceptions. But he and the rest of the young Gopher squad are a year older: Minnesota returns 17 starters this season.

“Went from the youngest team in America last year [to] now I think we’re the second youngest, so we moved up one spot possibly,” Fleck said. “That doesn’t mean you can’t win. We’re just young. And close to 80 percent of our team is only freshmen and sophomores, which is exciting.”

Go Gophers!!

Let me get my Fleck Defender suit on....

Holy cow.
That's still really young.
Hopefully by 2021 we can compete against Iowa. A competitive game at Iowa would be icing on the cake this year.

Surely somebody has calculated the age of each roster - only way to know if we can be competitive.

I am always optimistic and focus on the positives any time a coach is hired at the U. I then develop my opinion as they settle into their roles. My jury was out through the Illinois game last year, when at that point, I was even starting to dip my toes in the "doubts" pool. What transpired since then was not only improvement, but many things that he had actually said and predicted all along, even dating back to his intro press conference were coming true. So, I'd say at this point I am at least 80-85% "won over."

I say all of that because through it all, the one thing that makes me wince the most and continue to wince is this dead horse beaten "youngest team in America" garbage. I hate it. I was actually already sick of Kill overusing the young team angle.

I've been a big Fleck defender just because it's been so easy for negative fans to throw stones while a guy builds. TC media was doing this a lot last year. Their evidence was PJ saying "we're young" as an excuse while it was factual and the fact that PJ touted Vic V. as a key recruit.

Illinois game was a low point for sure, but the finish to the season was enough to make it an acceptable to good season for year 2.
He's not anywhere close to a Brohm at Purdue who has a better conference record and only loses games that don't matter. If Fleck could win more Big Ten games and lose more non-conference games, he'll be on a more Brohm-like trajectory as our team gets older like Purdue.

Wins and losses not mattering. #culture.

Being young obviously matters but with players leaving earlier for the NFL, older players transferring to non power 5 schools or conferences, players being processed more than ever... All teams seem to be playing a lot of freshman and sophomores these days. The problem with continuously pointing out how young your team is that it sounds like a coach setting up a defense for future shortcomings or potential excuses. Almost like a cop out. Winning cures this.

“Went from the youngest team in America last year [to] now I think we’re the second youngest, so we moved up one spot possibly,” Fleck said. “That doesn’t mean you can’t win. We’re just young. And close to 80 percent of our team is only freshmen and sophomores, which is exciting.”

Not sure if these changes would be called backtracking or just hedging, but I’ll take it as progress. Possibly PJ is adjusting to some criticism will trying to keep the same message.

It’s not an excuse, it’s just coachspeak. I continue to find it hilarious that anyone gets worked up by it. It does reflect a certain level of maturity in the reader.

Nebr roster has 48 freshmen, 32 redshirt freshmen, 26 sophomores....................................106 non/junior senior
Iowa roster has 37 freshmen, 30 redshirt freshmen, 19 sophomores....................................86 non-junior/senior
Penn State has 24 freshmen, 21 redshirt freshmen, 8 sophomores, 29 redshirt sophomores...82 non/junior senior
Minn roster has 32 freshmen, 17 redshirt freshmen, 10 sophomores, 26 redshirt sophomores, 85 non-junior/senior

Nebraska has an oversized roster...WI, Purdue have not updated Spring rosters...

To the people moaning and complaining about the young stuff do you even bother to read to the end or just tune out as soon as you hear the words that back up your point?

Fleck is not using the young thing to say we can't compete or leaning on it as a crutch. The last part of what bleed posted says just that and he refers to having a young team as being exciting. He has commented many times about the amount of returning experience the team has.

Fleck is active with the media, he is willing to talk so there are lots of stories out there from many different sources. We get tired of hearing the same message over and over again because we read them all but that isn't the case with people across the country necessarily. Can't wait for the season to get here so that we have other things to focus on.

We are the 2nd least mature fanbase in the country...........

Id' rather he lead off with how much production we have returning as opposed to youth, but I'm not going to lose sleep

Fleck grates on my nerves, but I've accepted that is part of the deal. I'll always be Ski U Mah, and not RTB, but I'm going to root for Fleck to do well.

Fleck seems to take his commitment to community seriously, I think that's good.
He connects with players
and also, since it's football team, I feel is building a winning team that can trend up and have sustainable success and, yes, gROWth

Yes, but everyone on Minnesota’s roster self-identifies as a Freshman. Sorry... I mean Freshperson.

No, we're the youngest in the P5 according to our always truthful coach.

Last time we won at Kinnick was 1999...

Had a similar situation with Sconnie...

Just sayin' we're due...

Future conversation in the trophy case: "Floyd, please meet The Axe...and where's The Jug by the way?..."
