Rothstein is really on Nebraska in these lists.... I think his biggest miss is not calling Oturu or Gabe or both, breakout players.

Having Reuvers and not Oturo in the breakout players list is kind head scratching to me.

Since I have never heard of any of those Nebraska transfers, they can't be any good.

LOL at Rutgers ahead of Minnesota

Penn State is not finishing ahead of Michigan, and certainly not ahead of them by four spots.
Unless Bohannon returns for this coming season (which is increasingly unlikely), no way Iowa finishes in top 8.
Minnesota isn't finishing 13th.

This list is retarded, I stopped by along it seriously when I saw Purdue at three

At this point in time I’m feelin’:

1 Sparty
2 Testudo
3 Brutus
4 Purdue Pete
5 Chief Illiniwek
6 Bucky
7 Go Blue
8 Nittany Lion
9 Goldy
10 Hoosier Daddy
11 In Heaven There Is No Beer
12 Rutger
13 Herbie Husker
14 Willie the Wildcat

Feel strongly about top 5 (though Illinois has tough schedule) and 13 & 14. 6-12 is a crapshoot.

Looks like a little more research than Rothstein did, and a more believable list. I'll challenge you on the Turtles, since they almost always under perform their talent. I'm not sure Illinois is ready for that big of a jump, yet.

I'm dim, but I am not getting the imagery on number 11.

* dumb post by me.

Rothstein is usually pretty good at college basketball info (and he is one of the best at breaking news), but he's all over the place with the Big Ten, not only with the predicted standings, but his player lists as well too. My take:

1) Maybe Nebraska can surprise, but there isn't a logical argument one could make to have them above the Gophers. They are starting COMPLETELY over with a brand new lineup of transfers and JUCO players. Placing Nebraska ahead of the Gophers is blindly guessing without reason.
2) Iowa recently got a grad-transfer PG, so McCaffrey and him should be able to hold down the fort at that position. Now is Bohannen better? Absolutely, but I think the bigger hit was the departure of Moss. Big-time shooter and one of their best defenders. Iowa's defense could be really bad this year (like most years). Wisecamp is a stud though and will keep that offense clicking.
3) I've said this before and I'll say it again... I think Penn State makes the dance this year. Now 5th in the Big Ten might be too optimistic...
4) I absolutely agree with SS that Illinois makes a big jump this year. Tons of talent on that team.
5) Rutgers continues to improve (even with their best player going to Oregon) and doesn't play on Wednesday this year in the Big Ten tournament.
6) Not sure if I can give Michigan the benefit of the doubt this year. Beyond Simpson, Livers, and Teske, that is a somewhat depleted squad. Their starting lineup will have to play a ton of minutes. Howard is no Beilein when it comes to coaching.
7) Gophers make the dance :)

Coach Pitino chimes in:

It took me going through the process of elimination. Any reference to beer is assumed to be Bucky.

Hmm I see it more like:

1. Sparty
2. Testudo
3. Pete
4. Brutus
5. Illiniwek
6. Wolvie
7. Bucky
8. Goldy
9. Pedophiles
10. Alan Aldas
11. Gene Hackmans
12. Rotguts
13. Cornholers
14. Mildcats

7) Gophers make the dance :)

1) I think he's equating a new big name coach with instant success - just like the media did with Scott Frost at Nebraska this year. I wouldn't count out Nebraska doing better than expected by some but it would be unusual to do very well under these conditions.

2) The grad transfer point guard (second time he's transferred) has had a pretty mediocre career. They did get a well regarded freshman point, though.

3) Agree with both statements.

4) Agree. I think the pundit is too low on Illinois.

5) Probably but they did lose some key players and I think lost some depth in their front line which was a key factor in their tough defense.

6) Yeah, Michigan isn't automatic this year

7) They might but I don't see them getting off to the same fast start they had last year.

Painter isn't quite in Izzo's class for perennial expectations but, given they've made the tournament 5 straight years and 11 of the last 13 years, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I know they lost Edwards but, the way he dominated the ball, his loss might not weaken them as much as some think.

They also lost Cline and Eifert. There strong up front, but they're way to unproven in the backcourt for that high of a ranking
