Marshall, MN DE commits to Iowa

My wild guess is that Fleck believed he was going to ultimately choose Iowa, so it would’ve left us worse off to wait around for him to make that decision. Gave him the deadline, to prove if he was serious about the Gophs, and he wasn’t. Gave him the excuse he was looking for to pick Iowa, and let us move on without wasting time.

When Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck told Yahya he had three days to commit because the coach was going on a trip, the player ended all interest in the Gophers.

"They tried to pressure me," Yayha said. "I don't like being rushed into something that I don't want to do, like being rushed into a huge decision that's going to change my life."

This one feels fishy to me. Fleck has said repeatedly he doesn't want players to commit unless they are sure they want to come here so why then would he try to rush someone to make a decision?

Fleck might have told him he couldn't guarantee there would be a scholarship available after 3 days or that they wouldn't hold one for him until he was ready to make a decision but the whole idea of you have 3 days to commit or we won't take you seems sketchy.

It is difficult enough beating the suckeyes as is. Now it becomes even more difficult beating them with MN. recruits. Somehow we need to put a fence around the State. Who was the last recruit from Iowa playing for the Gophers?

Good thing Minnesota is able to recruit kids that live in other states.

There are reasons that I can think of why the urgency:
1. As have been said, PJ Fleck does not want to waste time knowing that Yahyah is Iowa leaning. His HS coach is from Iowa and probably has influence. Marshall is in feed porn country and has very strong Iowa influence.

2. Ask Dylan McGill about being late on his pre-signing days paperwork affair. He missed the boat.

In the what now?

Marshall just sent back to back kids to the Gophers in Hmielewski and Andries. His HS coach is not steering kids to Iowa. That was a joke made by the original poster.

Oops, I mean feed corn country. ?

Well whatever you want to believe. I trust Fleck in what he is doing. I'm sure he has a handle on what the players are thinking and am sure he isn't losing any sleep over this one.

“Pressuring” or whatever you want to call it is a technique PJ uses in recruiting. It has been discussed on here before in its possible role in having more de-commits. Whatever technique he chooses, it will work with some kids and not others. That’s life in sales. As long as it works more than it fails, that is likely OK. Seems to be working for PJ here. So long Yahya.

We have a couple of Marshall guys, I don't think the coach is pushing kids towards Iowa.

I also think PJ was pressuring him to commit. But as others have said, life is full of deadlines and PJ was likely just being upfront with him. We needed someone to play that position and if he wouldn't commit, someone else would. I actually really like the kid's tape, so I'm not going to rip on him. I also don't blame PJ for putting pressure on him.

It just seems like it wasn't the best fit.

When Ferentz offers multiple kids for one spot, he probably does the same thing. Actually, I think they’re doing the kids a favor by making it clear that offers can dry up quickly.

Screw it! Lets just flip him back to MN. If we want him or are there bigger fish that we are crutting???

If you dont feel like a kid is all that interested then move on. Doesnt sojnd like Black had much real interest in MN and was always an Iowa lean. Cool thing, but the reason hes not at MN has nothing to do with pressure. Job offers often come with time frames. You get a girls information and theres a window of opportunity. He had months to decide if MN was right for him and clearly wasnt convinced. If this was where he wanted to be a timeframe wouldnt have stopped him

Didn't Jirehl Brock say something similar about his recruiting? I seem to remember that Brock said he felt too much pressure in Fleck's recruiting methods, but then recanted a bit.

Anything south of the Minnesota River looks like Iowa so that is where kids can get confused.
When ever I’m heading back to civilization up 35 and I get to Lakeville, I’m like “Nope!”

I think Smith-Marsett said something about Fleck "pressure" too so maybe it is just Iowa guys. :)

Just guessing, but Fleck is probably pretty good at reading if someone has any real interest in coming here and if they don't he is probably fairly quick to move on to a more realistic target.

No point in wasting a lot of time on a guy who is most likely going to sign somewhere else.

Unfortunately, it is a high pressure decision. They are making a decision at 17 years old that could impact the rest of their lives. I get that.

However, I think it's probably good for the players that Fleck is so upfront. All of these colleges need to fill up their recruiting classes with as much talent as possible and they can't be left holding scholarships when the music stops. It's the nature of the business and a pretty good life lesson. Note- I don't think any of these guys did anything wrong by rejecting the U.

It reminds me a little bit of that line by Arnold Rothstein - "Flip a coin. When it's in the air, you'll know which side you're hoping for."

I would guess, deep down, these guys just didn't want to be Gophers and we all (them included) got to find that out sooner rather than later.
