I gotta side with Winasota here. When money is up for grabs, everyone is suspect. If anyone thinks otherwise, I'd like to talk to them about some real estate. Or a fish farm. Or a poker game.

Beyond that, I've never heard of Coffey's agent Javon Phillips, and I doubt I ever will again, because I consider the NBA unwatchable. And since I'm not an NBA fan, I have no idea if this is accurate, but according to one online source, Phillips' client list is comprised of Coffey, Alpha Diallo (who will return to Providence for his senior year) and Desi Rodriguez, who went undrafted after four years at Seton Hall, got a training camp deal with the Clippers (chalking up 9 minutes of floor time in two pre-season games) and is now with the Agua Caliente Clippers in the G League (where he averaged 10 points and five rebounds in 28 minutes a game this season).

I found this interesting regarding Rodriguez's contract:

"The Exhibit 10 contract is one that was established last year with the arrival of two-way deals. It is a minimum, non-guaranteed contract that has a couple special features. The first is that instead of a guarantee, these contracts have some kind of bonus for staying in the team’s organization, ranging from $5,000-50,000 (usually at the latter mark). If the team waives the player in training camp, but they stay with the G-League team for 60 days, they get their bonus. This is a nice incentive for G-League players, whose year-long salaries used to be lower than that bonus. The second feature is that the contract can be converted into a two-way deal at the discretion of the team.

The Clippers giving Rodriguez an Exhibit 10 means they like him at least a fair amount (and/or are doing his agent a favor). Basically, they want to keep him in the organization, even if it’s at Agua Caliente."

At any rate, a G League player and another who may or may not make the G League is hardly a robust stable of clients.

In all fairness, another site lists Phillips as the agent for Kemba Walker, Jeremy Lamb and a few others. But a quick internet search shows Jeff Schwartz (the founder of Excel Sports Management) is usually referred to as their agent in the media.

Bottom line, who knows? I guess time will tell. But color me skeptical.

per Shooter:

It looks like Amir Coffey, who’ll take his chances in the NBA draft on June 20 rather than return to the Gophers for his senior year, will end up in the G League with a two-way contract playing for about $7,000 a month while trying to work his way up to the NBA, which has a minimum salary of about $850,000.

The best Coffey can hope for is being a second-round pick in the NBA draft. The top half of second-round picks generally get guaranteed contracts; the second half do not. Coffey could try playing in Europe, but that’s tough unless you score a lot.

Go Gophers!!

Shooter seems to be all over the place in those two sentences. Coffey is going to end up in the G League, unless he doesn't get drafted, in which case he'll go to Europe.

Thanks for the "info," Shooter.
