Georgia Souther Uni. vs Gophers

The reality is, the Georgia Tech win was probably our 4th best win of the season (Wisconsin, Fresno, Purdue), but Talon was trying to minimize it by saying Paul Johnson didn’t coach in the game. As I pointed out a few weeks ago, he most certainly did.

I perused the board, sounds like they're making a lot of excuses tech..GT wasn't really trying, wasn't interested, etc etc

One main reason for this is that there is a lot of Georgia Southern fans that are also fans of Tech. Also you have to remember that the vast majority of Georgia Southern fans have been watching the flexbone offense that Tech used since Johnson invented in while he was offensive coordinator at Georgia Southern under Erk Russell. Many of the fans would have no objections if Georgia Southern returned to this offense.

Before the game: GT is going to want to send Paul Johnson out in style. Expect them to be amped and ready to go and give their coach one final victory

After game: Clearly GT didn't care about the game and their lame duck coach.

Not to mention we also physically dominated Wisconsin and Purdue prior and lost a close game to Northwestern

I was going to post the same thing. To be fair, quite a few Gopherholers thought we were going to get rolled by them too. On the surface, they had some nice wins, but when you dig deep, it’s obvious that it was a down year for the ACC (except for Clemson). I definitely didn’t expect that level of domination.

I did not read all the posts in both these 2 threads but they could give you a idea of the Georgia Southern fans feeling at that time.

Yeah, that game was a mess. I wouldn't have been confident enough to pick a winner ahead of time, but I expected it to be closer. I'm going to preface this statement with "You guys still would have won" but the starting GT QB played like crap. He was missing reads the entire game, both in the option and the passing game.

Prime Example being this 3rd and 7 on their opening drive, I remember yelling at the TV. This play is designed to go to #31 who is sneaking out of the backfield on a wheel route and he completely misses him wide open down the sideline. Your safety likely would have run him down but he would have been well across the 50-yard line by then.

https://youtu.be/5VuLvZoPD2g?t=888

Different formation but this is what that play is SUPPOSED to look like - notice how in both videos the defense gets pulled to the opposite side of the field or away from the guy running the wheel route.

https://youtu.be/ipYaU0vP-mE?t=1295

AGAIN this is not me saying we're necessarily going to be better than GT, this is just one example of the QB making a bad read in that game. The right tackle also got away with a blatant hold anyway.

Another thing...the Gophers were missing several starters. Our best defensive player (linebacker), Blake Cashman, who is now with the New York Jets and a starting OL skipped the game to prepare for the draft. Others were suspended for unknown reasons, including another starting linebacker. Add that to the long list of injured starters that missed most of the season, and will be back, including Winfield, Smith and Brooks. It clearly didn’t matter who we put out there against GT.

You have to play the game with what you have. Georgia Southern last game in FCS where the Eagles beat Florida was a team that when they played Florida were down 16 players due to injuries.

TALON - If you had read the GT board for the last 3 years about half of the GT fans on the site wanted Johnson to leave. Many of the GT fans wanted a more balanced offense that would pass more. Still GT lost a lot of games because of poor defensive play. Your right about the 2018 team & fans not caring much. Maybe the new coach can be more consistent. I look at GT as being like a Navy, Army or Airforce or an academy school that has a hard time recruiting.

Paul Johnsons record at Navy and GT
https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/coaches/paul-johnson-1.html

The 5 years PJ was Head Coach at Georgia Southern with the right coaching staff and players PJ won 86% of his games, was in the playoffs all 5 years, played for 3 national championships winning 2. As both offensive coordinator of different schools and HC the only place he had real trouble at was GT.

TALON Most of us that followed GT for years looked at the last 3 years at GT and didn't see much possibility of GT winning any bowl.

TALON -aS the starting QB at GT has done for a while, but GTs defense lost many a game for them. AS with the Gophers they rolled all over GTs defense! When the Gophers played GT they were overmatched!

Former #Big22 Member and @GSAthletics_FB offensive tackle Brian Miller suffered an injury during Friday's practice. Here is the official statement.

"Brian Miller suffered a hip injury at practice today and is being evaluated by specialists"

Miller started all 13 games in 2018

EVEN IF HE HAS TO HAVE A HIP REPLACEMENT HE WILL BE READY TO TAKE ON YOUR DEFENSIVE LINE!

Talon,

I saw you were watching Big Ten Network earlier. Did you watch the preview show they did from the Gophers practice tonight?

I only watched the Gopher episode where your HC was teaching his players values. I was impressed!

Do you have one on GSU?

Do you have one on GSU?

It’s on again in an hour, and then replayed a few times overnight. If you want to learn more about the team, I highly recommend it.

If they do one on GSU, let me know, and I’ll watch it.

If the school released an “official statement” it’s probably not good. Pre-season injuries suck. Is he a good player?

He's one of our best o lineman. The school likely released a statement because we had a ton of media on campus for some football traditions we do the Friday of move in day and couldn't avoid the attention.

Georgia Southern football shows signs of offensive expansion in 2nd scrimmage

STATESBORO — Georgia Southern’s second scrimmage of summer camp consisted of 114 plays from various field positions in front of a nice crowd on Saturday at Paulson Stadium.

Redshirt junior quarterback Shai Werts led the first-team offense which showed signs of its offseason playbook expansion under second-year offensive coordinator Bob DeBesse, while the defensive depth at the disposal of coordinator Scot Sloan was also on full display.
Werts was pleased with the entire team’s performance, and as Fall semester classes start this week on campus, he said the Eagles are right where they need to be.
“The operation part of it, I feel like we were real clean and not too many penalties and things like that today,” said the fully-focused Werts of the team’s performance in front of a sizable group of Eagle fans.
“I feel like (the smooth operation) was the biggest improvement from Scrimmage No. 1 and No. 2. Obviously, with a lot of stuff going on (off the field), I wasn’t really able to focus only on football. But now that I’m back and that’s over with, all of my focus has been on football.“

Update on Brian Miller GSU O lineman

— Savannah native Brian Miller (Memorial Day) suffered a hip injury on Friday at practice and the right tackle’s recovery timeline is unclear for now as the severity of the setback is still being determined. Miller started all 13 games at tackle last season as a redshirt freshman and was a lock to start there again this year before the injury.

“He’s still being looked at as far as the extent of the injury and everything,” Lunsford said Saturday. “We’ll update people as we learn more, but our thoughts and prayers are with him.” Redshirt senior center Jakob Cooper also commented on Miller’s injury. “It’s next man up. Brian suffered a bad injury, but he’s in good spirits. We all got to talk to him (Friday night) and he’s supporting us like we’re supporting him.”
— With Miller out and Cooper at center, the first-string offensive line unit shuffled throughout the scrimmage, but the unit seen protecting Werts most often on Saturday was as follows (left tackle to right tackle): Jarrod Leeds, Aaron Dowdell, Cooper, Lawrence Edwards and Drew Wilson.
— Redshirt junior tight end Cam Brown had a solid showing Saturday while being targeted by Werts early and often. Two of his receptions were negated by penalties and he was the victim of a pass interference in the end zone later in the day.

You do know if GSU beats LSU or comes close a win for the Gophers will make you rise in the standings!

I’ll root for GSU over LSU, but let’s be honest. Your squad is gonna get rolled.
