Addition by subtraction a comin'

I've heard nothing at all about him being any sort of issue or distraction. Seems to be cheering his teammates on whenever the camera cuts to him. It's still possible a light comes on and he becomes a major contributor here. Still think he has a lot of talent and if harnessed properly can be a player

He gone. Pitino’s eyes for freshmen needs to improve. Hopefully he figured it out in 2018.

Terrible list.

Buggs and Wally were Tubby recruits.

Curry being TBD is absurd.

Fair. I mistakenly included an extra recruiting year.

Best case scenario he’s hitting like 50%. The point remains.

Agreed 100%. I hope he becomes a great player here, but if not I think it will be somewhere else, maybe at a slightly lower level of D-1.

I agree with your central premise. Hits are hits and misses are misses for whatever reasons. A lot of people around here are very wrapped up in "should have" or "would have" or "if not for..." One could say that Dorsey might very well have been a "hit" if he weren't a complete head case but, since he was a complete head case, that "if not for.." belongs in an alternate universe. Curry likely would have been much better than he is now without his injuries, but that is some other Curry in an abstract world, not the one we have. I agree; status is "TBD."

I don't agree with everything on your list, but it's a good list. I still think McBrayer, on the whole, has been a fairly marginal recruit. Sorry if I offended all the sentimentalists around here.

Every program has a lot of misses, unless you're Duke or Kentucky level programs.

In theory you have 12 scholarship players. No one plays 12 guys, some guys just aren't very good

Pitino has had a lot of misses but I think his biggest issue is roster balance. Hopefully it improves with this large incoming class and stays solid. Sick of lacking smalls or bigs. Basketball is positionless so I don't worry about Centers or Point Guards. I want guys who can defend multiple positions and score the ball.

Not every scholarship has to be an average to above average big ten starter, but I don't think we can continue to afford losing so many kids and being forced to supplement with transfers and and JUCOs. It's a big reason for why Pitino's teams have never had any depth. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that 3/4 of our traditional recruits stay with the program, stay out of trouble, and provide at least consistent meaningful minutes off the bench by the time they're a junior or senior. The other 1/4 can be filled through transfers and JUCOs.

I fully expect all 3 of our 2018 recruits to stay with the program through graduation. I'd like to have that sort of confidence on a semi regular basis.

Per the NCAA, 40% of D1 guys transfer by the end of their sophomore year. http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/research/tracking-transfer-division-i-men-s-basketball

This isn’t unique to Minnesota. Its everyone. You have to get transfers and supplement classes.

I’m more disappointed in Pitino than IW. I thought Pitino had finally broken the offensive mold of locked pattern offense that never seemed to get people open and was adding a player with speed and handles that could break down defenses and hit open people. But he’s tried to pound the square peg into a round hole and turn IW into Nate Mason (who could rarely turn the corner on anyone, but shot well enough in the pattern offense), even though IW isn’t a great shooter. So IW was asked to ignore the openings that he kept seeing and run the triple-handoff weave and feed the post. I wonder what IW could have grown into with more patience and willingness to reshape the offense some to leverage what he has good at.

Pitino wasn't forcing IW into bad shots, and wasn't forcing IW to play lackadaisical defense. He didn't play because he got a ton of chance and blew most of them, on both sides of the ball. Rarely have I ever seen a slower, out of position, or worse defensive PG, and almost every time IW got in, the other team lit up the board. On offense, he was both the best ball handler and best passer, and yet consistently forced (and missed or got blocked in traffic) shots he shouldn't take. His strength was handling and passing, and instead of working harder and honing his D, and stopping taking forced shots, to help the team with his strengths, he continued to display too many gross weaknesses to the detriment of the team.

As much as I wanted IW to succeed here and as excited as I was when he committed here, it turns out he just wasn't the type of player the team needed: which was merely a competent PG who could play D and control the game. He couldn't even be that. It's time for both sides to move on.

I'd be curious to know what percentage of those transfers are related to coaching changes, either immediately or a year later.

The powerpoint in that link is also pretty interesting. It says 43% of schools had 0 or 1 transfer in 2017 and 2018. It seems like some schools have an excessive number of transfers that drive up the average, which might imply that coaching changes are a big factor. I don't think being in that 43% is an unrealistic hope.

Sums it up perfectly, good post.

I still wonder at the end of the game with the lead and we can't get the ball inbounds, it would make sense to put him in because he is only guy who can get open. Then sub him back out. it wasn't like the gophers played great defense at the end of the last game.

I was wondering the exact same thing. That seems like the time he would be extremely useful.

Who is the last transfer the gophers had? I honestly don’t remember. Some of these guys suck but they are t leaving. And obviously coaching changes lead to more transfers.

Fitzgerald and Harris left last year.

Someone should create a "Best of Jelly" thread. Post the highlights of his time here. He gone.

Washington showed tonight why he should’ve played more this year imo. I love Dupree as a person but man he just wasn’t good his senior season. Washington was disappointing but still should’ve gotten time to grow.

In my humble opinion, I think Pitino should have taught IW differently. Instead of instantly pulling, benching, and dog house-ing IW, he should have just coached him up more and let him learn with game action. Defensively, he wasn't good but he was definitely a spark Offensively. Now, had he had more game experience, he probably would have improved a lot. But of course, he was in the dog house and will probably not be around next year.
