At the ripe old age of 36, there is very little romance left in Richard Pitino.

His six years at Minnesota have been filled with ups and downs, injuries and promise, and he has felt the sideways glances of distrust from the locals, who as former Vikings coach Brad Childress once said, “will give you directions to anywhere but their house.” He has worked for three athletic directors, had barbarians at his gates during an eight-win season in Year 3 and a 4-14 Big Ten record last year, and also was showered with accolades during an NCAA tournament run two years ago.

The wild pendulum swings only seemed to harden the famous East Coast cynicism that came as a birthright. He loves to crack wise and views the game through eyes that have been opened wide to the podiums and pitfalls of the coaching profession ever since he could follow his father into the gym as a toddler.
