Now, this is all predicated on Coffey continuing his hot streak down the stretch (he doesn't even need to be as elite as he's been the past couple games, but enough contribution to help win a few more games this year, whether that's tonight or in the BTT or in March Madness)...

Anyways, I think Coffey should go pro. He's had rough stretches this year but is finally showing he is one of the most dominant players in the league. I'm really not sure what benefit there is for him coming back next year. I am not clairvoyant or anything, but I feel like Coffey's draft stock won't get that much better next year seeing as he is prone to be MIA some games and a streaky shooter in others. If he just duplicates his performance this year with slightly better numbers, is it even worth it?

Coffey has accomplished a lot in his career. He will have led us to two NCAA tournaments. He will have multiple 30+ point games. He will have learned to handle the PG position, which was invaluable experience that will surely help him transition to the next level.

Will another season here really boost his draft profile?

Even if the NBA forecasts a high 2nd round pick, I think Coffey should take it. Why risk the injury or risk being another year older, which NBA teams do hold against prospects.

Personally, I hope Coffey kills it the next 3 (and hopefully more games) and just calls it a career here.

I'd hate to see him leave early, but if it means he leads us to an Elite 8 or something, I'd take that trade in a heartbeat. I don't see him leaving unless me makes a lot of noise in the tournament though.

Two things he can still improve: 3-pt shooting and ball-handling. His ball handling is fine on the fast break, but leaves something to be desired otherwise. Can he improve that enough in the summer to be worthwhile? At his size, 3-pt shooting needs to be better. Again, can he improve that enough during the summer? If he dominated the Big 10 next year (first team, league leading scorer), and very good year shooting the three, would that get him into the first round?

If he could get drafted somewhere in the first round after this season, he should definitely come out for the draft. That guaranteed money would be impossible to pass up. If he looks into it and it seems he won't be drafted in the first round, he should come back for his senior year.

His lack of consistency could be a problem and his overall stats are above average but he does not appear to be a 1st round guy. I hope he gets smoking hot and if he gets a high look I'm think he leaves.

I haven't seen anyone projecting Amir as a player who would get drafted in either round. I find it kind of surprising given his level of production and good size/athleticism combination on the wing.

How can Amir possibly think he would get drafted when there are films of so many games like tonight when he is passive and a non-factor?

You are completely out of touch if you think he’ll get drafted. Learned to handle the PG? Please- can’t go right and can barely go left against quick PGs. When he has a favorable match up he can look great- won’t happen in the pros.

not saying he is a PG, just saying the minutes he got at the point this year helped him as a player.

I'm not saying Coffey will be a star player. think he will make a good bench wing.. NBA defenses don't tend to gameplan a player like that. Coffey will get his in the league

He will declare...get feedback and return...happens often not a biggie

I think Amir will come back but you can say that about a ton of high picks.

If by "Pro" people mean playing in Europe, then Coffey could go make a nice living. If one means play in the NBA? Maryland has 3 guys alone who would get drafted before Coffey. There are too many deficiencies in his game that an NBA scout would note. But, if Coffey can learn French, Spanish or German he'd be successful in Europe.

Coffey isn't even in some people's top 90! Still some work left to do for him! Test the waters this summer and then come back for senior season.

Some people didn’t read the disclaimer in the opening paragraph of my OP

You don't need to learn the native language to play overseas, but hopefully he will come back next year, improve his weaknesses, and make it in the NBA.

He'll put his name in so he can get info from scouts on how to improve his game. He won't get drafted after this season and quite frankly, he doesn't deserve to. Too many no-shows in road games. It's easy to turn up the intensity when you're down 20 in the second half. Do it from the opening tip and you may not get down 20.

Aside from looking at what he's done here, has there been any recent updates by "professionals" about his NBA outlook?

This.

Coffey isn't a PG....and that's what he's been playing. Next year, with Carr and Willis, Coffey will be more versatile and show his skills at his natural (what would be NBA) position. Because there is no chance that Coffey plays PG in the NBA.

I kept hoping that about Jordan Murphy and shooting 3s. He would be a first round pick if he could shoot from outside. But, in four years he never was trained to improve.
Coffey is following that trajectory. Our coaching staff doesn't seem capable of teaching players how to shoot. Coffey, needs his old man to hire a shooting specialist for the entire spring and summer. The poor outside shooting leaves Coffey on the outside looking in at the NBA.

Outside shooting is king in the NBA these days. Coffey's outside shooting breaks down into 2 very distinct categories. If you watch him he is extremely effective with the straight on 3 and even from some distance, but everywhere else around the arc he has really struggled. You could blanket him at the top of the key and give him room and let him wonder elsewhere and defensively you would be just fine.

Yup

Not everybody can learn to shoot at a high percentage....that's number one. Number two, 100% the student has to put in hours and hours and hours daily...not twelve hours one weekend. Nobody, can do it for you.

Back to one, not everybody has the physical abilities to execute the preferred mechanics. Their wrist, their hand, their elbow, their shoulder, something won't allow them to do what you'd like. They have to find their own way...what works for them and put the time in.

Number three, maybe the most important part..once you develop the ability now, you need the mentality. Some guys can make 100 free throws in a row and shoot 59% in games. Some people don't want the burden of scoring, the responsibility....being "the man". Lots of guys can score as the 4th best player on the team...as soon as you design plays to get them shots they start throwing up bricks. Not to mention the difference of being defended by the other teams best defender versus being left unguarded. Lots of wannabes melt down versus defensive pressure.

Shooting is complicated and very difficult to teach. You can get 100 kids looking pretty good in a week long basketball camp. That doesn't make them shooters.

If it was easy, obviously there would be a lot more shooters. Gophers got one shooter and he doesn't hunt shots. (or have plays designed to get him any)

Coffey, certainly should explore the draft but like several have said he is not in most all evaluators top 75 lists of prospects.

He should and will participate in the evaluation.

This, fair for him to go get some opinions. I do continue to think -- imagine putting him on one of the top teams in the country in his natural position. If the opinions for him nationally would be a lot more positive, that generally means you have a pretty talented player. Would Tre Jones get mocked in the first round had he stayed home versus gone to Duke? Probably not right now, maybe in the future.
