Dan Monson is in his 12th season as the 49ers coach, and he has taken the team to the NCAA Tournament once, in 2011-12, when his well-cultivated team that featured four seniors, including Casper Ware, won the Big West tournament title.
Getting to the NCAA Tournament is the top of the ladder for schools like Long Beach State and conferences like the Big West. Winning regular-season titles and posting 20-win seasons are terrific achievements, but the best that gets you is a possible ticket to the NIT and a small dose of job security for the coach.
Monson is a prime example of a coach who built a career out of one moment. He had immediate success when he got the job at Gonzaga, launching the program to its status as the ultimate mid-major success story. He left after his second season for Minnesota money. He cashed his checks, went to the tournament once in seven-plus seasons, and the Gophers logically moved on.
The Gonzaga experience made him a candidate at Long Beach. It’s not well remembered, but at one point there was a snafu between the Long Beach president and athletic director on who was getting the job, and for a brief period, it wasn’t Monson.
The 2011-12 Big West title team was the most exciting moment for the school since the early 1990s, when Seth Greenberg, now a studio star at ESPN, took the school to the NCAA Tournament twice, coming close to an upset of Illinois in the first round in 1993.
But by any standard, one NCAA Tournament bid in 12 seasons is a letdown. Research for any active coach with the same or similar stat came back pretty much empty. John Giannini at La Salle has one bid in 14 seasons. Fran O’Hanlan at Lafayette is in his 24th season and has been to the tourney once in the last 19 seasons. New Hampshire’s Bill Herrion is 0 for 14.
