per Syracuse.com:

Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim struck and killed a man walking outside his vehicle on Interstate 690 around midnight, a source has confirmed for Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.

The man in his 30s had been in a car with four others near Thompson Road in Syracuse when their vehicle crashed for unknown reasons, said a source familiar with the investigation.

The man at some point got out of his vehicle, the source said.

That’s when Boeheim drove by and struck the pedestrian, the source said.

Boeheim was given a routine blood-alcohol content test and had no alcohol in his system: .00 BAC, the source added. He was interviewed by police and released.

Friends and family tell Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard that Boeheim does not drink alcohol. Boeheim says he will issue a statement shortly.

Go Gophers!!

geez. sad situation for all involved

Unfortunately this is not uncommon. You are safest in your vehicle after a crash on the interstate until the police can come in and control the situation.

Very sad, but no alcohol and he didn’t try to run and hide. Those are the two things that can get you criminally charged for striking someone with your car.

“We are saddened by the death of a member of our Central New York community,” Syracuse AD John Wildhack said in a statement. “On behalf of Chancellor Kent Syverud and the entire Syracuse University community, we extend our deepest condolences to all impacted by this tragic accident. Coach Boeheim is in contact with local authorities and cooperating fully. Out of respect for those grieving, there will be no further comment at this time.”

Go Gophers!!

Imagine the student section chants.

Tragic accident. You shouldn’t be wandering an interstate highway at midnight without reflective outerwear. Like the previous poster said it’s best to stay in your vehicle until the police arrive.

Very sad. Sounds like the roads were also icy.
