Richard Pitino grew up simply as “Rick’s son.” It was the label he heard when his dad Rick Pitino was the head coach at Kentucky, then for the Boston Celtics, then at Louisville.

Even after he graduated college and began following in his dad’s footsteps as a basketball coach, Richard remained known as Rick’s kid. The designation followed him to assistant jobs at Louisville and Florida. As the tag stuck with him, Richard began plotting how he might carve his own career, one that would give him a chance to make a name for himself without being tied to his father.

That’s why he was so excited when, at the age of 29, he became the head coach at Florida International University. It was going to offer him a chance to build a program without the constant pressure and eyeballs that follow major college basketball.
