The Gophers have hired defensive line coach Jim Panagos to fill the open position at Minnesota, according to Football Scoop.

Panagos started his career in quality control with the Minnesota Vikings in 2002 and served as an assistant defensive line coach under Brian Baker in 2004. He coached the defensive line at Central Florida for five years and spent four seasons working with Joe Rossi at Rutgers.

He most recently coached the defensive line at Temple for the past two seasons. Panagos was nominated for the Broyles Award in 2017, an honor that goes to the nation's top assistant coach. He has shown an ability to develop NFL-caliber defensive line talent and is leaving the school for the same role at Minnesota.

Press release from U of MN:

Fleck Adds Veteran Panagos To Staff

University of Minnesota football coach P.J. Fleck announced today the hiring of Jim Panagos. The veteran coach returns to the state of Minnesota and will lead the defensive line.

Panagos has more than 25 years of coaching experience, which includes stints with Minnesota defensive coordinator Joe Rossi at Rutgers (2012-15) and the Minnesota Vikings (2002-05).

The East Islip, N.Y., native comes to Minnesota after a brief stay at Georgia Tech and two years at Temple.

While at Temple, he coached the defensive line and was also an assistant head coach in 2018. With the Owls, he was part of a staff that helped Temple rank among the top three nationally with eight defensive touchdowns (first), 31 forced turnovers (third) and 13 fumble recoveries (third). Temple was also one of the American Athletic Conference's top teams in total defense (second), passing defense (second), three-and-outs (second) and scoring defense (third) in 2018.

Panagos was nominated for the Broyles Award (nation's top assistant coach) in 2017 after the Owls recorded 39 sacks and 92 tackles for loss.

Prior to Temple, he was a defensive consultant at Pittsburgh in 2016 and coached the defensive line at Rutgers from 2012-15. Rossi was at Rutgers from 2012-15 as well and was the defensive coordinator for the Scarlet Knights from 2014-15.

Panagos also coached the defensive line at UCF from 2007-11. With the Knights, he was named FootballScoop's National Defensive Line Coach of the Year in 2009 and helped coach the nation's No. 4-ranked defense in 2011.

Panagos was with the Minnesota Vikings from 2002-05. He was a quality control assistant from 2002-04 and was a defensive line assistant in 2005.

His career also included a four-year stop from 1994-97 at the C.R. James Alternative School in Tampa, Fla., where he was an assistant coach and also taught mathematics.

Panagos played defensive line at Maryland from 1989-92 and led the Terrapins with five sacks and 12 tackles for loss in 1992. He graduated in 1993 with a degree in criminal justice and then worked at his alma mater as a defensive line assistant that same year.

Panagos and his wife, Maureen, have three children: Jack, Hayden and Olivia.

Looks good from what I can see here. Probably an upgrade at least on paper.

per STrib:

The Gophers have hired former Temple assistant Jim Panagos as their defensive line coach, head coach P.J. Fleck announced Saturday.

Panagos, 47, spent the past two seasons as Temple’s defensive line coach and the 2018 season as the Owls’ assistant head coach. After head coach Geoff Collins left Temple to take the Georgia Tech job, Panagos was hired as the Yellow Jackets’ defensive line coach on Jan. 3. But now, he’ll be reunited with Gophers defensive coordinator Joe Rossi. Panagos was defensive line coach at Rutgers when Rossi was the Scarlet Knights’ defensive coordinator in 2014 and ’15.

"So fired up to join the family! #RTB,'' Panagos tweeted.

Panagos replaces Marcus West, who left Minnesota to become assistant head coach, co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Charlotte.

An East Islip, N.Y., native, Panagos had assistant coaching stops at Maryland, Central Florida and Pittsburgh at the college level. He also spent 2002 through ’05 with the Vikings, first as a quality control coach, then as assistant defensive line coach and assistant special teams coach.

At Temple, Panagos was part of a coaching staff that helped the Owls rank in the top three nationally in 2018 in defensive touchdowns (eight for first place), turnovers forced (31, tied for third) and fumble recoveries (13, tied for fifth). Temple finished second in total defense and second in pass defense in the American Athletic Conference in 2018.

In 2017, Panagos was a semifinalist for the Broyles Award, given to the nation’s top assistant coach. He also was Football Scoop’s national defensive line coach of the year in 2009 while at Central Florida.

Panagos played defensive line at Maryland from 1989-92 and led the Terrapins with five sacks and 12 tackles for loss as a senior.
