2019 Offensive Coordinator Hot Board

Matt Simon

2017-present: Minnesota - Wide Receivers
2014-17: Western Michigan - Wide Receivers
2013: Rutgers - Wide Receivers
2012: Rutgers - Player Development
2011: University of St. Thomas (Minn.) - Tight Ends
2010: Northern Illinois - Offensive Quality Control

Simon took Western Michigan receivers to new heights. In 2016, Western Michigan passed for 3,533 yards and 33 touchdowns. The man responsible for the majority of those yards, receptions and touchdowns was Simon-coached NCAA Consensus All-American Corey Davis. Davis, who was the first Consensus All-American in Western Michigan history, caught 91 passes for 1,427 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2016. He ended his career with 5,212 yards in four seasons, which made him the Football Bowl Subdivision all-time career receiving record holder.

In 2015, Simon coached the most prolific receiver duo in the country since 2002. The duo of Daniel Braverman and Davis were the first receiving duo since 2002 to catch more than 1,400 and 1,300 yards in the same year (Davis recorded 1,436 yards, while Braverman had 1,371).

Clay Patterson

Coaching Experience
2018-present: Minnesota - Tight Ends
2016-17: Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College – Head Coach
2013-15: Trinity Valley Community College – Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks
2007-13: Texas A&M University-Kingsville – Offensive Coordinator / Assistant Head Coach
2006: Tarleton State University - Wide Receivers
2003-05: Southeastern Oklahoma State University - Wide Receivers

Prior to his time at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, Patterson spent three seasons at Trinity Valley Community College, as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. During his time at Trinity Valley, he helped lead the team to five SWJCFC championships (three conference and two conference playoff) and to two Heart of Texas Bowl championships. His offense broke the all-time yards per game record at any level of football with 656.1 yards per game during the 2015 season.

Did the Maine coach call his own offense?

Defensive guy, so very doubtful.

2011: Maine – Defensive Assistant / Defensive Backs
2009-10: Springfield College – Graduate Assistant - Wide Receivers / Quarterbacks
2008: Maine Maritime Academy – Assistant Coach

I'm available, but I like to throw it deep on almost every play...

You know where to find me PJ, if you need to...

Unless PJ knew this was coming and has a list of OCs he'd like to replace Kirk, I think Clay Patterson gets the nod since he has experience. However, Matt simon has been with PJ longer...maybe a Co-OC situation possibility?

Put all your money on Patterson getting the job and Burns getting a new title, something like run game coordinator.

I think Patterson could slide right in and do a good job.

* Off Tackle Left
* Off Tackle Right
* Slant
* Toss it up for grabs

That covers about 90% of it

Pretty sure Fleck is at the coaches conference this week and was speaking about what he looks for in staff members. Probably getting passed plenty of resumes.

Maybe we should expand this to the 2019 Coaching Staff Hot Board...

Kirk Ciarrocca

Coaching Experience
2017-present: Minnesota - Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks
2013-17: Western Michigan - Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks
2012: Delaware - Running Backs Coach
2011: Richmond - Quarterbacks Coach
2008-10: Rutgers - Co-Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks
2002-07: Delaware - Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks
2000-01: University of Pennsylvania - Wide Receivers
1996-99: Princeton - Wide Receivers
1994-95: Western Connecticut State - Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks / Wide Receivers
1993: Delaware Valley College - Passing Game Coordinator / Wide Receivers

Ciarrocca came to Minnesota after serving as the offensive coordinator at Western Michigan since 2013. The Broncos thrived under Ciarrocca in 2016, as they averaged 41.57 points per game (ninth most in the nation) and set program records in points (582), total yards (6,737) and touchdowns (75). This came after setting records in the same categories in 2015.

In 2016, Western Michigan had the nation’s 25th-ranked rushing offense, 49th-ranked passing offense and had the fewest turnovers in the country with eight.

Mark Coyle - please give Kirk Ciarrocca a bump in pay.

Yes please do or we may lose him next year. So far he has tremendous loyalty to the Gopher Football Program.

Sounds like we have a ready-made replacement on staff.

How long does Patterson wait for the job to open up? Not saying I prefer him. Just wondering. The coaching staff stability we got comfortable with under Kill is very rare. Replacing assistants is a big part of the HC's job in a winning program, which we are becoming.
