Minnesota has added another top-35 recruiting class in P.J. Fleck’s second true cycle as head coach. The staff clearly prioritized finding unique position prototypes, especially on defense. With many different skill sets for the coaches to develop, the team will certainly benefit from adding a No. 33 ranked class.

Fleck talked about the emphasis his staff placed upon filling defensive holes in this recruiting cycle. He specifically referenced the quickness, length and quick twitch athletic traits of defensive linemen. Minnesota has a few open spots they will hold onto during the late February cycle. Fleck compared this timeframe to "free agency" and said there will be players hitting the open market.

Minnesota also added plenty of depth at three-technique by securing Keonte Schad and Rashad Cheney. Four-star defensive tackle Kristian Williams did not sign this afternoon, but has expressed his continued commitment to Minnesota.

Fleck also mentioned DeAngelo Carter as one of the class sleepers because of his explosiveness and power. In a tweet last week, I said he reminded me of a very young Maurice Hurst. The potential for him to develop is very high and Fleck is clearly excited about him.

On the edge, St. Louis athlete MJ Anderson can grow into a five-technique defensive end, too. Fleck directly referenced his quick twitch athleticism and explosiveness.

The staff also managed to fend off Miami and Florida State to sign linebacker James Gordon IV. Fleck said his physicality and tackling skills stand out, but he will always remember eating alligator at his home visit with the coveted prospect.

In the secondary, defensive back Solomon Brown brings ball skills, quickness and versatility to the backfield. Fleck referenced his physical tackling ability as an important trait within his skill set.

Not only that, but he specifically mentioned four-star cornerback Tyler Nubin as a player who could contribute early in his college career. His physical man-press style is something Minnesota could certainly use in the secondary.

There’s no doubt the varying skill sets on defense are going to allow the Gophers to do many different things schematically. The coaches also dashed recruiting resources into other areas such as wide receiver, running back and quarterback. It’s clear the staff dedicated their efforts to bolstering the front-four and secondary. P.J. Fleck echoed this message in his National Signing Day Press Conference.

In addition to the defensive additions, the staff felt like the team needed more diverse options at wide receiver. Fleck particularly mentioned length and size as two areas he wanted to bring into the room. He checked this box by beating out Baylor and Alabama to land mismatch wide receiver Nnamdi Adim-Madumere. He features a 6-foot-4 frame to go along with, quickness, physicality and ball skills. Fleck said the addition helps fill an area he wanted to address in this cycle.

At the quarterback position, P.J. Fleck talked about Jacob Clark’s gunslinger mentality and overall intangibles. Those are definitely a few traits that stand out when watching his tape. Fleck said the quarterback room will initially feature a competition between Tanner Morgan, Zack Annexstad and the incoming recruits.

The videos below will provide specific insight regarding many players and philosophical ideas Fleck discussed. Before diving in, here is a link to my complete 2019 Gopher Football Recruiting Guide. I analyzed every single player in the class!
