Kristian Williams Commits to Minnesota...

I don't mind losing a 4 star offensive lineman from in state as much if we are going to land a 4 star D-lineman instead.

I'll take 4 star D-lineman every day of the week and twice on Sunday's.

^^This!

The 19th can't come soon enough.
In a couple of years it will be like having multiple Ra'Shede Hageman's on the same D line.

Yes the 19th can't get here soon enough. I'm excited!

That's something I've never seen on the Gophers. We've had years with a good D End, or a good D Tackle, but no complimentary players. There is a chance we'll see that change and start having a defense that can truly shut down the line of scrimmage. This allows the linebackers to flow freely and make tackles on the edges which will stop us from allowing so many big plays. I know it will still be 2-3 years before we see what these guys can all do together, but I'm excited.

Who needs linebackers when you have a D-line like the one the Gophers are putting together??!! Just put up a wall of 7 d-linemen :)

Wow. Huge get.

If this class holds, this is, by far, the most talented/lauded HS class of defensive lineman in my life time.

Can Cheney play some SDE?

He was a DE in High School from what I read.

We don't play a defensive scheme that moves defensive ends around with the TE, right? So the terms "strongside" and "weakside" DE are meaningless for us?

4 star 91 on 247
High 3 star on Rivals and ESPN.

Pretty impressive, particularly considering he hadn’t visited yet or did I read that wrong? PJ gaining some momentum on the recruiting trail.

We still have different kinds of players who do different things depending upon the scheme/down and distance. For example, Devers got a lot more snaps on 3rd and long than he did on 3rd and short.

Cheney is quick, he seems like the kind of guy who could play DE on early downs and move inside on passing downs.

Amen.

Absolutely. If they mean to signify “run-stopper” vs “pass rush specialist” or something along those line, then I get it.

We will see all 3 of our stud DT's this year. Goaline formation will be fun to watch.

Given the struggle we have had along the DL for quite some time now so I am thrilled to see all these highly rated D-Line players committing. Always a crap shoot on how they will turn out but I will take a shot on a DL recruit with SEC offers any day of the week.

Prefer to stop the opponents well before needing a goal line stand

I prefer if we score a touchdown on every offensive play but it doesn’t mean I don’t want to see an improved third down conversion rate. Be realistic.

Gone will be the days where we will need to build them up to norms of the conference or "coach them up". Gone are the days of posters saying getting one DT a class is sufficient for the Gophers. We live in a new age of football.

Well, our competitors are recruiting at an equal or higher level so I’m not sure that’s true. Recruiting is up all across the Big Ten. Check out Purdue’s class, for example. Wisconsin may hang onto their QB recruit which is disappointing. Nebraska has good talent on the roster and coming in. Iowa is the laggard this cycle.

Gone will be the days... Future tense. Hope. Not despair. The trend is up for us. We are getting closer to the conference standard now and will be more so in the future. Half full.

Yes, I know we are doing better in recruiting but last I heard we are 8th in the big ten. Not that great. I will wait to get really excited when we are third or fourth in recruiting and start beating most opponents.

Sounds like a lot of fun.

Williams, Cheney & Schad are all great pick ups for us and all essentially look to play the same position. We need multiple guys who can play there. That kind of depth is what really separates the top of the B1G, from the bottom.

We also have another DT commit on board in DeAngelo Carter from Georgia, who at 6'1" 305lbs is more of a nose tackle.

Then we have MJ Anderson at 6'3" 270lb, a strong side DE with the potential to add weight, and move to DT.

There's also 6'3" 225lb, weak side DE D'Vion Harris, who's more of a pass rusher.

Lastly, Logan Richter who was included in the Dline recruiting, will now be switched to OG. I like his athleticism at guard and it helps shore up a recruiting class where we didn't really have a great haul on the OL.

That's interesting. I hadn't heard that and it makes a lot of sense.

According to the signing day thread, Williams got cold feet and is now waiting til February. :(

We'll see what happens in the end.

I don't think we had any February signings last year.
We'll see if Fleck fights for one this year or moves on to 2020.

I am a Minnesota sports fan in general. Therefore I get really nervous when hearing stuff like this. Of course a lot of this might be my imagination but it always seems that when it comes to MN sports - rumors have a way of actually getting worse when the reality becomes clear.
