Gophers’ linebacker Blake Cashman will not play in the Quick Lane Bowl on Dec. 26, according to his Instagram. He joins tackle Donnell Greene as the second Minnesota player to skip the team’s bowl game. The extra time will allow each player to train and rest before the draft process begins.
Cashman led the team with 104 tackles, which ranked fifth among Big Ten defenders in 2018. He also posted 15 tackles for loss, broke up five passes and forced one fumble.
Cashman will likely hire an agent and begin training for the NFL Draft in April. At least a handful of NFL teams have been doing extensive homework on the former Gophers' linebacker. He is expected to earn a scouting combine invite, which would significantly bolster his draft resume. Cashman may be a late round draft pick due to his skills as both a linebacker and versatile pass rusher.
It will be worth keeping tabs on Cashman’s status during the draft process because of his potential testing numbers. If he gets an invite to the combine, his traits will stand out among other prospects. Cashman could rank high within many of the key athletic metrics NFL teams are using to evaluate players. This is especially important considering how much teams value athleticism among linebackers at the next level.
