Go Gophers!!

Best of luck to him, hopefully he is able to find his way onto an NFL roster next year one way or another. Unfortunate to not have him for the bowl but at least he made the decision early enough that the staff has time to groom a replacement over the bowl practices.

Seeing more and more players sitting out bowl games to get ready for the NFL. I get it from the players standpoint if they don't really have anything to prove but it is unfortunate for the teams to lose what is typically going to be a key player.

Duuuuude. One more game man.... Oh well.

Best of luck!

Players should play. That's why they received a scholarship.

I talked to his dad at the first game of the year. He approached my wife and I and we ended up talking for about 30 minutes. He made it very clear that this was the plan and that the Greene's are not big fans of row boats, high energy head coaches and the great woman behind our fearless leader.

Nice guy but it was a weird 30 minutes. Made no sense as there were 1000s of nearby Gopher fans. Just wanted to talk I guess.

Best of luck to Donnell. I hope he makes the NFL. Completely understand why he isn't risking his potential career for a bowl game. He can start training for the combine now.

Interesting. He does have an NFL frame but it’s not like he has really been exceptional here, although he was solid and I’m glad we had him. Would think a bowl game might be another opportunity to get some quality film unless he’s doing the senior bowl. I’m guessing that he is probably a projected 7th-UDFA right now but a good combine could maybe help.

So where does this end? If a guy is projected to be a 3rd round draft pick, can he choose to sit out an entire year? Can he miss half the season?

He wants to train for the combine. This has him training 3 weeks sooner, lowers his chance of an injury. Even just getting rolled up on could significantly hurt his draft stock. I'm actually not sure he'll get a combine invite.

Of course they can. A player can quit at anytime. If you had the projected #1 overall pick on your team, he could quit at halftime of the national championship game. I'm not sure why you're having trouble grasping this.

Obviously not playing hurts some guys draft stock. Other guys are ensured health and their draft stock will remain very high.

You can always choose to leave school and sign with an agent.

It's just a cost/benefit analysis for the potential player.

He left everything on the field getting our Axe back. Get healthy and get paid.

If a scholarship can be pulled at the end of a season a player should be able to give his back at the end of the season. No harm no foul.

If you're not paying him, and he's done with school, why exactly should he finish the season? His payment was tuition, he has graduated.

The only argument would be he's "turning his back on his teammates", which is valid.

Man it seems like we have some salty and unappreciative fans when it comes to some of our best players. Donnell was one of the team's best players and he played through some injuries this season to help the team get to six wins. I say good luck to him and thank you for being a beast out there. Big Dan rightfully got a lot of love this season, but Weyler and Greene were both really good players.

Of course someone can quit when they want. But then they lose their scholarship. Greene received a scholarship for the 1st semester to play football. He’s not honoring his end of the agreement.

Best of luck! This Gopher fan appreciates your efforts for the maroon and gold!

The 1st Semester ends December 20th. He did his part.

Some fans seem to simultaneously want players to stay because of their abilities while downplaying their odds of being drafted. Same with Tyler.

I don’t like the concept of quitting on the team and teammates but if he has good reason to believe he could qualify for a multimillion dollar contract it’s a tough situation. Workers everywhere quit on their colleagues on a routine basis leaving them in a bind, usually for brighter horizons elsewhere. PJ himself quit on his WMU recruits for a better opportunity. Everyone does it.

Going forward, I wonder if the university will help players secure a loss of value policy that might nudge them into staying on. Given he is a mid to low prospect, for Greene that policy may not be an option.

Good luck Donnell! Guy played through injury this year. He deserves respect.

Sad and selfish on the part of Mr. Greene. End of argument.

His scholarship was to play an entire football season. He didn’t. For everyone that thinks it isn’t a big deal, i’m sure opinions would be different if he was missing the Rose Bowl. Or the CFP.

I didn't pull out the chart, but I hope this does not cause the loss of a redshirt.

Dunlap has played in 3 games, and Schluter isn't in danger of being redshirted.

It absolutely wouldn’t. Go get the bag, young man.

ALSO: Donnell having NFL success is better for the Gophers than winning the quick lane bowl
