Media Prediction Thread: Quick Lane Bowl - Minnesota vs Georgia Tech

Stewart Mandel:

Quick Lane Bowl (32): Georgia Tech 28, Minnesota 21. I feel like there’s some sort of unwritten bowl rule that retiring coaches get to go out with a win. See Bear Bryant, Vince Dooley, Tom Osborne, Bobby Bowden, Don Nehlen, Frank Beamer and more. It’s your turn, Paul Johnson.

Bruce Feldman:

Quick Lane Bowl (14): Georgia Tech 38, Minnesota 23. Expect Tech to do everything it can to send Paul Johnson out on a high note.

CFN chimes in with a more in-depth prediction:

So Who’s Going To Win The Quick Lane Bowl?
Can the Minnesota defensive front hold up against the running game that’s about to tear off yards in chunks? It’ll be a good Golden Gopher performance for a quarter, and then the floodgates will open – sort of. Minnesota will control the clock just well enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but Georgia Tech will run for well over 300 yards as it sends Paul Johnson off a winner.

Fearless Prediction & Line
Georgia Tech, 34-24

QUICK LANE BOWL

MINNESOTA vs. Georgia Tech

When: Dec. 26 | Kickoff: 5:15 p.m.
TV: ESPN
Where: Ford Field (Detroit)
Latest line: Minnesota +5

Urban Meyer isn't the only coach looking to head off into the sunset with a bowl victory. Except Paul Johnson might actually stay retired. It will be the final game for Georgia Tech's head coach, and the Yellow Jackets bring their usual high-powered running attack (334.9 yards per game) into the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Late-season wins over Purdue and Wisconsin propelled P.J. Fleck's Gophers into a bowl game, so confidence should be running high. Minnesota limited the Badgers to just 170 rushing yards, their second-lowest total, so there's enough defense to at least slow Georgia Tech. And the last time Fleck was at Ford Field, he was winning a MAC championship with Western Michigan. Minnesota 24, Georgia Tech 20

David McCoy, WCCO-TV Sports Anchor chimes in:

“I actually like the Gophers in this one. They feel like they are peaking at the right time of the year. They beat the [Wisconsin] Badgers for the first time in 15 years. They have won a bunch of games in the back half of their schedule to get bowl eligible. They are playing a pretty good Georgia Tech team that won six of their last eight games. And, of course, this is coach Paul Johnson’s final game before he retires. They run that wacky, throw-back, triple-option offense something different that the Gophers will have to contend with. But I like the Gophers here.

Nice to hear a local reporter being positive.

Final Analysis

Georgia Tech's offense is nearly impossible to stop, much less slow down. The Yellow Jackets have scored 144 points in their last four victories while Minnesota has allowed almost as many points (135) in its last five games. Georgia Tech's defense is vulnerable but should get an assist due to the Golden Gophers' inconsistency on offense and uncertainty at quarterback. The Yellow Jackets finished the regular season better than Minnesota and will definitely be motivated with this being Paul Johnson's final game as head coach. The Gophers will put up a fight, but Georgia Tech sends Johnson off into retirement with one last "W."

Prediction: Georgia Tech 28, Minnesota 27
