I was thinking it might be worth a separate thread just for travel / hotel / ticket information for the Quick Lane Bowl?

We've been there before so I'm guessing a lot of folks might have some great first hand experience to share on these things.

Official Site:

https://www.detroitlions.com/quick-lane-bowl/

Gopher Football Site:

https://gophersports.com/sports/2018/11/16/football-bowl-central.aspx

Right now the gophers are offering tickets at $89 a piece ... that seems like a lot for a lightly attended bowl game.... but maybe people have bought from them before and found it worth it?

I'd love to hear anyone's suggestions on flight, hotel, or other travel related / non football game advice.

Game Time:

Quick Lane Bowl
Detroit, Mich. (Ford Field)
Wednesday, December 26th, 2018
5:15 p.m. ET

You can already get 50-yd line tix on StubHub for $50’ish.

Yeah that seems better than the official route.... prices might come down too on the resell market.

If you're willing to fly on Xmas day, I really doubt you can beat Spirit's price. Non-stop for like $50 each way I think.Probably will go up if a lot of people are looking and/or buy them up. The flight is later, 6pm, so wouldn't work for the 26th.

I just moved here this summer. I've flown back and forth to Minnesota a few times now and have never paid more than $175 nonstop on Delta. Got one for $125. It's so cheap to fly between Detroit and Minneapolis for weekends. Flying when all the business travelers do (Monday-Friday) is another story though.

I'm going to guess you can buy the cheapest tickets and have the pick of seats.

Just remember that Spirit will charge you for the oxygen you breathe though.

We stayed at the Atheneum Suites Hotel last time. Great hotel and the location was perfect. This time I booked at the Greektown Casino Hotel ($139 on hotels.com). It's near the Atheneum.

How close to Ford field are the casinos in Detroit?

There was a thread on here the other day with a method for getting free tickets to the game. Some kind of sweepstakes, but everyone who enters gets tickets at the least.

Yeah. That ended. Was a limited amount apparently.

IIRC, that offer was only open to MI residents.

Several good hotels in the downtown area.

Marriott Renaissance, Courtyard Marriott, Westin, Doubletree, Holiday, etc. All are walking distance to Ford Field (15 minute walk probably) and you won't go past any bad areas on the walk. (short Uber would work).
Car ride from Airport to Downtown is about 30 minutes.

Ford Field is a solid stadium.
Good choices of restaurants in the downtown area or slightly outside of downtown.
Midtown area is on the upswing as well.

I believe one (Greektown) is between downtown and Ford Field, so depending on where you are staying, you might walk right past it.

If you might be going with a significant other that doesn't like sports here are some things to do during the day on Wed or Thurs:
The Detroit Institute of Arts is really cool with a giant Diego Rivera fresco of assembly line process back . It's a quick Lyft ride from the stadium/hotel area of downtown area https://www.dia.org/art/rivera-court
Nearby the DIA, is a cool bar with a good juke box (if you like Palmers you will like this place) The Bronx Bar
Also a beautiful old speakeasy between the Westin and Ford Field. It's Cliff Bells http://www.cliffbells.com/ , but they had great jazz music, food, and a very nice atmosphere

Also the Motown museum (never been) and this place (outdoor art project where empty homes have been turned into public art) https://www.heidelberg.org/

Tickets from the U are now $99.25. That seems pretty steep...

I have my tickets and place to stay but wondering if anyone has seen a full schedule of events? Pep rally, etc?

You can buy directly from the bowl and get GA seats in the endzone for $29/each. They also have a "Family 4 pack" where you get 4 GA tickets for $16.75 each.

I understand I can get them cheaper, but I would really like to get them from the U. They make it difficult to purchase from them when they are priced so high.

I'd like to attend, and if I do, I will definitely be buying from scalpers. Guessing I'll be able to find my way in for about $10 and sit basically anywhere -- did that for the Texas Bowl vs. Syracuse.

That end of downtown is not the bombed-out reenactment of "Life During Wartime" that some of you are making it out to be. Ford Field, Comerica Park, Little Caesars Arena, and the Greektown Casino are all within close walking distance of each other, with some good grub joints around there. One of the teams will be staying at the Greektown Casino Hotel.

If in the area longer, the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn is a really neat museum to spend a day at.

The Motown Museum is also a cool place to visit and heavy on self-promotion, but that is in a bad part of town and should only be visited during daylight.

Tickets will be much, much less on the street for this game.

Here is a link to Fanzone... https://www.detroitlions.com/quick-lane-bowl/where-to-stay

The Gophers hotel is the Westin Book Cadillac. The group discounted rate is $139. Click on the link in the above website to get the discounted rate.

I cancelled my reservation at the Greektown Casino Hotel and booked a room at the Westin. It turns out the Greektown Hotel is the hotel for Georgia Tech.

The Book Cadillac Hotel as as recently as my 2004 trip to MIchigan to see the Gopher Football game, was a gigantic urban relic and target for urban explorers. Detroit had all sorts of these incredible abandoned or mothballed classic buildings. You will still see several of them as you drive around or walk around Detroit, although thankfully this one rose again.

But what if I want to visit wartime Detroit?

I was hoping for a sort of escape from New York (but Detroit) tour ....

The UMAA has planned a 'Sota Social for game day:

Join us at Buffalo Wild Wings in Detroit before the game for a 'Sota Social!
Wednesday, December 26, 2-5:15 p.m.
1218 Randolph St, Detroit
(free event, food and drink on your own)

There are some really interesting vacant building to check out for sure. The old train station is really a sight and it’s close to the vacant lot for what used to be Tiger field which is cool to see as well (Corktown).

geez, ticket prices near $100, best round trip flight for 2 days about $360, MGM Grand Detroit room > $200/1 nt

I'm reminded why I never convince myself to try these bowl games trips, its flat out expensive. And I'd be going to Detroit
