Gophers to play Georgia Tech in Quick Lane Bowl

lol what?
We got bailed out by this match-up. This is awesome exposure when we probably should have been playing NIU.

It isn’t “awesome exposure”. It’s the Quicklane Bowl featuring MN and GT. It’s like a tree falling in the woods.

I wasn’t looking for exposure and I didn’t care where we played - just who we played. I wanted to play someone I would enjoy watching us play. GT is a complete downer to me. I’m glad you are happy.

The key to defending the option is, assignment football and discipline something we didn't do in our bad losses, but showed improvement on under Rossi. Having to concentrate on both to prepare for the option should carry ove into next year.

Georgia Tech fans for sure and even possibly Paul Johnson himself think that the Gophers and the Quick Lane Bowl are beneath them.

This is on the ACC and the GT administration squarely. Neither got their jobs done correctly and GT has to play in a terrible game and Paul Johnson and his staff are beyond pissed off. I wouldn't be shocked if he refuses to coach in the bowl game.

If any team should feel like they are slumming it here, it's Georgia Tech. They finished 7-5, we were 6-6. They were 5-3 and finished 5th in their league, Gophers were 3-6 and finished 9th in theirs.

Don't feel down about the opponent. We got more than our fair share.

At least for Gophers fans the fact is only 8 days ago the vast majority of us did not think we'd be bowling anywhere...and with good reason.

Had no idea what team would show up in Madison.

Excited to see if Coach, the Staff, and the Team can focus on the task at hand and Beat Tech!

Georgia Tech is a big opponent. They are a better foe than Miami, Virginia, or Virginia Tech, all of whom were mentioned as possible opponents. Georgia Tech beat all 3 straight up this year and finished with a better record. 2 of GT's losses were Clemson and Georgia. They are legit.

I think they lead the nation in rushing, but with 3 weeks to prep I’m sure we will be prepared.

I wonder if GT is pissed about the location, the opponent or both? Does seem kind of weird that a bunch of teams they beat leapfrogged them for bowls. I couldn’t go to the bowl game no matter what, so Detroit doesn’t bother me. I would’ve preferred a non triple-option team because I think we’ll struggle and it’s kind of gimmicky. On the flip side I’m excited to see how Rossi gets the boys prepared and to see our offense keep progressing.

Take a look. They are really upset about it.

Why does a crappy city like Detroit have a bowl game while Minneapolis doesn't? If your going to go to a cold weather city for a bowl in a dome there should at least be things to do.

Detroit has come back a bit and there are some cool spots around town. It is more interesting than most Big Ten away game destinations.

It's the only bowl on at the time and it's on ESPN.....but it's also on December 26th starting at 4:15. Definitely wouldn't call that great exposure.

Ugh. Their option offense is going to kill us.

We didn't win vs. mobile QBs. We beat more traditional QBs.

On top of that it's the coach's final game. Players going to be super pumped up for that too.

Yuck. Wasting 15 days of practice to prepare for triple option that we'll never see in conference next year, our run defense is bad, and GA Tech coach retiring after it.

I’m so glad that you guys aren’t watching the game and will not have any comments on it. What a relief for us Gopher fans.

I don't think many Gopher fans are going to be mad we're playing Georgia Tech. They are a fun team to watch. And I don't think Tech fans are going to be pissed about playing Minnesota. At least we're a p5 team they never play. No one wants to go to Detroit. Only thing worse would be playing a middling MAC team (In Detroit).

I've spent a lot of time in both Nashville and Detroit, and there's about an equal amount to do in both. If you like casinos the area around Ford Field has that. Nashville will be moderately warmer that time of year, but the weather inside Ford Field will be perfect.
Does Detroit have a Tiki bar on the beach? [emoji483][emoji484][emoji1634]

Here's their equivalent to GH: https://gtswarm.com/threads/georgia-tech-vs-minnesota.16618/

Not a lot of excitement but apparently they could have ended up in Birmingham...

Fans and apparently players are not happy about getting passed over by other ACC teams in the bowl selection process. They don't seem that upset about having to play us, most of the frustration is directed at the bowl (date, time, location.....), and the fact that they feel they deserved a better game.

Maybe a whole lot of Western Michigan fans will show up to honor their former coach! It could give the GOPHER a home field advantage. They loved him @WMU!

I'm tempted to do a quick trip for this one .... family in town who could watch the kids...

Great job Georgia Tech. Reward your players for a good season by not fighting on their behalf for a game closer to home.

If the administration can't do better than this, than good luck getting any donations to the tech fund or athletic fund. Disgraceful.

Not too great of a deal for #CPJ. Not a great deal at all... beat UVA stomped VT.... Detroit. Ugh. CPJ deserves better.

While you’re telling Whisenhunt thanks but no thanks, it’s time to call Swofford and tell him what’s what. The conference brass is a disgrace

We probably need to explain the "Swinging Gates" tradition to them...

There was some misunderstanding back for the Music City Bowls...

Some Georga Tech fans seem to GREATLY over estimate their administration's involvement in "picking" a bowl game.

No statement from Fleck about how this is a tremendous match-up of great interest to fans across America?

Well, the Early Signing Period kids will already be on board before the bowl game...if anything influenced their decision it would be bringing The Axe back to Minneapolis...

I love how people are finding a way to b*tch about making a bowl game. After Illinois, nobody thought this was even possible. I'm happy to get to watch another game and for the program to have all the extra practices.

+1

If we only get 18k to a Gopher game, how many locals will go to a game like Indiana vs CMU?

GT lost to Duke at home 28-14 and Duke had two weeks to prepare. This same Duke squad was crushed at home 57-9 to something called Wake Forest.

TBF, Duke did go on the road and beat Northwestern 21-7 early in the season.

This is a tremendous match up for us.:D

Georgia Tech's offense is really tough to prepare for, however most teams only have a week and a couple practices to do it. We will have almost a month and 15 practices to get the players ready for what GT will be running. On top of that we will have an entire season worth of film to study.

The major bummer about this matchup is we'll be "wasting" much of the 15 practices on defending an offense that we'll never see again instead of expanding skill sets that will be useful next year. Nevertheless, go Gophers!
