• Gophers men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino on his tough schedule: “We’ll be tested early. We play Utah the second game of the season in our building [Monday], Texas A&M, Santa Clara, Washington [those three games are in Vancouver], at Boston College, Oklahoma State, obviously the Big Ten has a couple games early [at Ohio State and vs. Nebraska]. We will know where we stand.”

Go Gophers!!

per Shotoer:

Gophers coach Richard Pitino scheduled Utah for Monday night at Williams Arena. The Utes were picked in the preseason to finish No. 8 in the Pac-12.

“I did plan the Utah game with the fans in mind because we play that Oklahoma State game at U.S. Bank (Stadium), which is great, but it’s not a home game, and we’re playing those three games in Vancouver, which is great, but they’re not home, and then at Boston College,” Pitino said.

Go Gophers!!

Excellent coach speak as Utah is picked 8th in a weak Pac 10, OSU blew a 22 point lead and lost to UNC CHARLOTTE today, BC is about 12th in the ACC. Washington lost in a giant blowout at Auburn. Likely not a top 30 team in the bunch, Santa Clara ! Suppose it will be a top 50 non con. Too bad too cause we are loaded and the conference is down , although not as bad as last year.

In the big ten with little or less one and done recruiting, down years tend to be down 2-3 years. Conversely up years are often up 2-3years.

Agree. Also think that there are plenty of very tough games in the conference and it will be great to watch. There are programs, several who are good every year and now that Indiana and Ohio St. will be restored as powers following the hiring of great coaches the league will be better.

This. Honestly, our schedule sucks the way the p5 teams we play rank right now in kenpom (which is speculative I get that)

Unless we run the table in non con or those teams do well this year, we need to do WELL in B1G

First, everyone complains when we don’t schedule any P5 non conference games. Then when we do schedule those games, people complain that they are good enough teams this year! Pitino has no control over how well his “mid-level” P5 opponents are going to be on any given year. Let’s face it, the top marquee P5 teams are not going to place us yet. It is too big of a risk to lose to a team that isn’t as highly ranked and there is not as much national interest in such a game. We will get more marquee games when we break through to the top of the B1G. Until then (next few years) we have to be happy with playing P5 schools that people have heard of...

All great points.

We played one game. We have three untested rookies. We have three veterans who are coming back from significant injuries. We have two vets who need to prove their worth.
For you to say "we are loaded" is unproven at this moment. We have potential to be upper tier in the B1G, but we also have potential to be bottom dwellers.
These games in November and December will tell.

Washington is a top 20 team who lost to a better team in Auburn. The rest are middling power 5 teams for sure. We are currently far from being a top 20 team.

Agree with you that it is nice to see them scheduling some power 5 teams. This is a much better out of conference slate than we have seen in recently years. Hopefully we get closer to the schedule MSU plays pretty soon, that would be really fun.
