First of all:
- Rossi should *not* be coaching a position group, IMO. He needs to be 100% focused on game planning, scheming against Purdue's offense, and just observing the defense at practice, seeing what works and what isn't working.
- move Marcus West to full-time DL coach, not just "pass rush specialist", and nothing else, focus on getting more from this group
- Rob Wenger should be full-time LB coach, and nothing else, focus on getting more from this group

- promote someone else to be special teams coordinator. Frankly, this needs to be the least of our worries. Just do basic kick receive, punt receive, FG kick, and FB block. No weird special trick plays, formations, etc.

Long term it depends on what the new DC and PJ wants... as it should be.

For the rest of this season, it makes sense to move West in as the DL coach and let Rossi focus on his DC duties. At LB, they have to have a grad asst. who was helping Smith, so that coach should be able to move in as full time LB coach. Removing Wenger from the his Special Teams role wouldn't be a good idea. Why change anything with that area at this point in the year. They've been good all year, minus some poor punts, so changing to basic stuff could hurt in that area. The issue is defense not special teams.

the Addae and West and Rossi hires have not had immediate impact at those positions

Since others have posted numbers about Smith, let's look at Rossi's points against/game average as DC:

Thiel College: 19.3, 17.4, 15.6, 16.1

Maine: 22.6, 24.5, 23.8

Rutgers: 29.8, 30.2
