Robb Smith out as D Coordiantor

When Rossi was DC at Rutgers, his defenses ranked 73rd (2014) and 98th (2015), so I wouldn't get my hopes up.

But the move had to be made.

Well, the Gophies are currently ranked #92 in Y.P.G. and #98 [edit #97] in P.P.G., so.....maybe it's a slight upgrade?

I’ll take it for 3 weeks

It was mentioned somewhere that our DL was getting pushed around yesterday because they aren’t very big. Other than Renner I believe they are all 300 pounds or more. How big do you have to be to not be pushed around? Sounds more like a strength issue to me. I remember the kid from Caledonia I believe who played DT for Iowa was around 280.

All I know is that our starting DEnd got absolutely *destroyed* by Illinois right OT on their first big run (ie, their 2nd offensive play of the game). Like, picked him up and threw him backwards several yards.

Actually, Rutgers had some top 30 classes during that time...
You're right - there was a #23, a #29, and the rest in the 48-56 range from 2010-2015 according to 247. That's about as far as I'll try to research - we'll see how it plays out. Save a big turnaround on defense, my assumption is we hire externally.

I don’t expect Rossi to be a long term solution. We may not see too much improvement this season. This isn’t really setting up for a bigger hire in the off season in my opinion

This defense seems to play lighter weight ends and linebackers at the line in the run defense quite a bit too...they sometimes have a tough time handling O-Lineman one-on-one. Not sure if they're playing on the line by scheme or necessity. I did see a couple large but young DL get manhandled yesterday too...to your point, they will get stronger with time.

I don't expect an overnight change to become a defense like Michigan has, but I think this decision sends a clear message that excellence is expected with the coaches as well as the players.
We have three games left. Play like you're going against Ohio State and win or lose at least you can keep your head held up. The games against Nebraska and Illinois were just embarrassing.

Lying Coyle should be the next
to go. Kaler is gone, thank goodness

Had to happen.

I’m surprised, as others here, that it happened before the end of the season.

Seems like one of the easiest decision to make given Smith's performance. Surprised it took this long.

The body language of the players tells it all. They needed to make a change now. Robb Smith has lost the confidence of his players.

There is no right timing when the team is in a tailspin.

I wish him and his family the very best. Maybe he'll land in a D1A or DII program that his scheme might be better suited for.

Why? Kaler has been supportive of University Athletics and his leaving is precarious. Like him or not Coyle is not a bad athletic director.

Always have to feel for any guy and his family when upheaval like this happens, but they know that a new job search is going to happen more than once going in. Had to happen. New leadership, new ideas, new motivation for the guys.

With the increasing success on offense, had to stop the bleeding on defense and field a functional unit next year if PJ wants to fulfill his vision. Hopefully PJ can hang onto recruits knowing the staff is probably history.

True. On the plus side, these guys aren't trying to scrape by on "average guy" salaries.

This had to be done. Like many, I'm surprised it happened now instead of at the end of the season. But I'll give credit for making the move now.

Can't get any worse.

nah, losing the oc and sc in the first 2 years is a fail on the hc. No staff no success - it’s over. A consistent staff is the coaches first job. He failed. Toss him out

Agree with those that felt this needed to happen and am also surprised it happened now and not at the end of the year. Don't expect any major changes over the next few weeks but at the very least it sends a message to the players that they will make changes to try and fix things.

Don't think for one second that Smith was the entire problem with the defense but when things were as bad as they have been the DC has to go and you have to try something else.

The start of the college football season is mere weeks away, and fans begging for Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide to backslide do not have a lot to pin their hopes on.

The Crimson Tide have won five national championships since 2009 and they are expected to have their usual array of talent on both sides of the ball and special teams in 2018. There is something of a quarterback controversy between the junior Jalen Hurts, who led the team to the last two national championship games, and the sophomore Tua Tagovailoa, who rescued the team after halftime of last season’s championship game against Georgia. It is a luxurious problem for Saban to solve.

There is this though: Saban has six new assistant coaches. Brent Key, an offensive line coach, is the only assistant in the same role as 2017. Saban also has a new offensive coordinator and new defensive coordinator. Running backs coach Burton Burns, the last remaining assistant coach from Saban’s first Alabama staff, retired from coaching in January. Mike Locksley is Saban’s seventh offensive coordinator at Alabama.

Are you from 1960? Changes in the coaching staff is just a part of college football now days. What we saw with Kill is not normal at all.

I get what he is saying. you need consistency to be successful.
You can have consistency while changing coordinators. Hopefully we don’t hire someone drastically different in terms of front. That could be bad.

I get that too. But he is saying Fleck should be fired because he wasn’t able to keep the same staff for two years.

There is one offensive staff member remaining from Harbaugh's first group at Michigan in 2015: Running backs coach Jay Harbaugh, who moved from a role as tight ends coach last season.

In three years, Jim Harbaugh has had four offensive staffers leave. Five if you count Dan Enos, who never coached a game here. His original offensive coordinator/offensive line coach (Drevno), passing game coordinator (Jedd Fisch) and running backs coach (Tyrone Wheatley) are gone, along with eventual run game coordinator Greg Frey.

Warinner, Jim McElwain and tight ends coach Sherrone Moore are all new to the offensive staff this season.

He's nothing but a scape goat something had to be done and he was it.

Not sure where you learned to play football or read defense schemes but you saying he’s nothing but a scape goat makes me question your football IQ.

NORMAN — Mike Stoops has been dismissed as the defensive coordinator for the Oklahoma football team. Head coach Lincoln Riley made the announcement.

"I have great respect for Mike," said Riley. "He's a quality football coach, great man and a close friend. It became time for a change in our program and that happens sometimes in football, but we cannot lose sight of the accomplishments Mike had at Oklahoma. He was responsible for a lot of success and deserves the gratitude of everyone associated with Sooner football, not only for his role in the winning, but for coaching with integrity."

For the remainder of the season, assistant head coach and defensive tackles coach Ruffin McNeill will serve as the defensive coordinator. Bob Diaco will move from defensive specialist to coach the outside linebackers.
