Only a Gopher fan would want to rank a teams losses. We love self-loathing.

Go Gophers!!

You lost me at best loss. No such thing. All losses are bad!!! The only thing good about a loss is if it creates a will and a way to win.

This thread ought to be an interesting read...

I'll start!

#1
2017 At Northwestern 0-39 - Seemed as if the team massively underperformed despite the issues the team was having at the time. It looked like a total custer.

#2
2017 Home vs Maryland 31-24 - Felt like many had believed this was going to be a win coming in and the game never felt as close as the score indicated.

#3
2018 At Maryland 13-42 - Didn't necessarily expect a win, but the blowout and inability to play better defense was disappointing. The loss of Nick C might have played a roll, otherwise this would be #2.

#4
2017 At Michigan 10-33 - We seemed to not have an answer for Michigan the whole game. Looked vastly inferior against a Michigan team that wasn't ranked. Losing at Michigan is not something new, but I was expecting a competitive game. I think we only ran 3 different plays on offense in that game. Just reused the same ones over and over again.

#5
2017 At Purdue 2017 17-31
Battle of two first year coaches. This one was disappointing in that we were better than them in 2016 and Brohm did a better job in year one getting to a bowl. Would have been higher if it was a home game.

#6
2017 #5 Wisconsin 0-31 - Went in as if it was a loss and had to go through the motions. It was a bad loss, but it almost didn't even count. Getting upset at this one was similar to getting angry when it rains in October.

#7
2018 Iowa 31-48 - Expected better. Only good thing was they stayed in it after a bad start.

#8
2017 At Iowa - 10-17 - Decent performance on the road against a decent Iowa team

#9
2017 Home vs #21 Michigan State 27-30 - Team was getting blown out, but had an entertaining second half getting back into it.

#10
2018 At #3 Ohio State 14-30 - Unexpected close game. Stings that they didn't take advantage of the opportunity due to a couple key plays. Out-performed expectations.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this will be the only ranking of losses posted in this thread.

I'll take the last two games of 2017 as the worst. We were told to be looking for improvement and buy in throughout the year, and instead we got regression and a team that looked likeit quit. Getting embarrassed by a mediocre Maryland team this year was also pretty bad.

On the flip side, we looked good for half a game against OSU this year, and the near comeback against MSU was interesting last year.

To me it depends on what your view of the team was and what your expectations were for those two games.

They were both true duds. Many fans were upset in that the Gophers didn't even try to win but instead were just hoping to get the games over ASAP.

The performance wasn't as surprising looking back seeing that the starting QB decided to transfer hours after the last game.

So it's come to this......

Spot on. I'm really hoping we aren't going down the road to rank moral victories. Surprised there was even one person who fell for this crap and bought into even feeding the OP a perspective. Disappointed to say the least.

Is it easier to rank the best wins? Or even B1G wins?

1. Nebraska win
2. Illinois

Although the first 3 could be back with the team at some point, so they aren't complete losses.

There are no best losses as far as the team and playing games.

Thank you! That was a delightful trip down memory lane. I think it's tough to decide on the ranking between #9 and #10 but your choice is probably right. In #9, we were almost hopelessly down and doing nothing offensively, but then Croft came in and had the best game of his career here. There was a feeling there that if the game was 10 minutes longer maybe we could have won. The good thing about #10 is that we were able to employ a diversified offense and move the ball both ways against an elite team.

Otherwise, I must say it is depressing to revisit how bad most of those losses really were.

Last year's loses to Maryland and Purdue we're the two worse relative to expectations and standing in the conference

Defense played probably it's worst game under Fleck. Only bright spot was a brief period in the 3rd quarter where our offense scored a couple times.

Gophers came off big home win vs Purdue. Hope was that this would be a win to make the team Bowl Eligible in PJ's second year. Offense was dismal and turnover prone. Defense played solid second game but gave up a key big play which broke the back of the chances to win.
