A day after a disastrous defensive performance in a 48-45 loss to Texas, Mike Stoops is out as defensive coordinator, sources confirmed to The Oklahoman.

Stoops was let go after his defense surrendered 501 yards and 27 first downs to the Longhorns as well as the most points scored by Texas in the long rivalry's history.

Stoops is expected to be replaced by either Ruffin McNeill or Bob Diaco.

McNeill is in his second year as the Sooners' defensive tackles coach. He's previously served as defensive coordinator at Appalachian State, UNLV, Fresno State and Texas Tech in addition to head coaching experience at East Carolina.

Diaco is in his first season as a defensive analyst for the Sooners after being fired along with most of the rest of Mike Riley's staff when Riley was let go by Nebraska after last season.

His resume also includes a stint as co-defensive coordinator at Central Michigan, defensive coordinator at Cincinnati and Notre Dame and three seasons as Connecticut's head coach.

Sooners coach Lincoln Riley didn't hide his displeasure about his defense after the loss.

“A lack of physicality at time I think was troublesome across the board,” Riley said. “Still, our inability to tackle and be physical. We had them stopped on third-and-18 and they drug us for 10 or 12 yards maybe to give it to them on fourth down.
