Hayden Fry never had a problem tossing zingers at border foes and rivals, many of which would set Twitter ablaze for weeks in today’s multimedia world.

Fry often launched memorable barbs at Iowa State, Northwestern and other schools, but the former Iowa football coach saved special ammunition for the program’s oldest rival, Minnesota. In one of the most comical and unusual moments in the long and sometimes contentious Iowa-Minnesota rivalry, Fry turned his folksy trash talk into a homespun acting appearance for a 1982 postgame news conference.

“There were a few people up there that ribbed him a little, like (Minneapolis Star Tribune columnist) Sid Hartman, because they were calling us farmers,” said former Iowa sports information director Phil Haddy, who worked at Iowa from 1971 through 2012. “(Fry) figured we’d putting a whupping on them, which we did, and he had it all set.”
