Like just about everybody else in the state of Minnesota, Emmit Carpenter was glued to the back-and-forth action between the Vikings and Packers on Sunday.

Carpenter, a senior kicker on the Gopher football team, experienced that game’s highs and lows — and ultimately, the anticlimactic tie — just like all the other fans watching it. Unlike most others in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, though, Carpenter was rooting for his hometown Packers to pull out a win in the latest installment of the historic rivalry.

When Vikings kicker Daniel Carlson missed what would have been the game-winning field goal in overtime, most Packers fans were happy. But Carpenter, a Green Bay native, had mixed emotions.

I could not be a kicker. I don't think people appreciate what really goes on in these guy's "heads" when they are out there.
 

Great article. I didn't know he knew Mortell growing up or that Mortell pushed them to recruit him. VERY happy to have him as our kicker.

My son was a kicker in high school and college, he was also an all state soccer goalie. I never understood how he handled those two positions.
