Gophers hot

Could this be the year Gophers football surprises everybody and makes a big jump from last year’s 5-7 record?

The Gophers certainly put on a good show Saturday in beating Miami (Ohio) 26-3. Coach P.J. Fleck wasn’t exactly happy with the defense, but the offense was excellent.

The Gophers and Iowa are the only teams in the Big Ten West without a loss. Division favorite Wisconsin lost at home Saturday to Brigham Young, which was a 22½-point underdog. Maryland, which plays host to the Gophers next week, also lost at home, to previously winless Temple.

So if the Gophers can beat Maryland, their next game, at home against Iowa, will tell the story of the season.

Offensively, the Gophers had some real stars Saturday. The combination of quarterback Zack Annexstad and Tyler Johnson reminds me of the Adam Weber-Eric Decker combination that set so many passing records.

Annexstad completed 12 of 20 passes for 142 yards with Johnson catching nine passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson has caught 20 passes for 283 yards and five TDs in three games.

Annexstad’s big pass of the day might have come in the second quarter, when he hit running back Bryce Williams for a key first down on third-and-17. And what a day Williams had, rushing 33 times for 141 yards and catching that one big pass for 35 yards.

Lastly, let’s not forget the efforts of Emmit Carpenter, who kicked a 44-yard field goal and found the end zone on all of his kickoffs.

Go Gophers!!

This team is solid and building towards something special in the coming years, but they aren't a great team right now and probably won't be this year.

That being said, the B1G West and the Gophers schedule is setting up for them to have a really, really nice season even if they aren't a "great" team. They could win 7 or 8 games this year and be SIGNIFICANTLY better next year.

Sid Hartman: Not a dink.

Just kidding. Gopher opinions aside, he's a giant dink.

The B1G West might be a whole lot of bleah. Purdue is going to throw for more than 600 yards and it still might not be enough. Northwestern getting drilled by Akron, of all teams. Illinois already shot its wad the first two games. Nebraska pitching an o'fer so far. Iowa's defense, however, looks really sturdy.

Ya never know. I think they are a year away but you can see the potential. Going to be fun!

Pretty sure he got offense and defense mixed up. Also pretty sure the opening kickoff didn't make it to the end zone and was returned. But otherwise, perfect Sid.

The real season now starts at 0-0. The Gophers' Big Ten schedule is a minefield.

One step at a time, one game at a time. We'll know after the Iowa what this team is capable of the rest of the way. One can only be optimistic moving forward.

He’s a nut but I guess he is our nut. If Sid is aware of it (talking about Sid not his ghost writer) it must be fun to see someone from his old hood break out like this.
