Just watched FSU coach WT on his team walk to the stadium on ESPN. He had one officer on each side of him. For years we have seen many college coaches with state patrol officers on their hip while they come on and off the field. I have always thought this was comical, but am I missing something? What the hell is going to happen to them? There is security throughout all stadiums. Who pays for this? Is it coach requested? Has a UM coach ever had this protection? So many questions. Just wondering what others think.

Seems like such a waste of money. Maybe it's because I'm not a southerner.

I think often those officers are volunteering. You get in the game for free, so not so bad...

Yes, it is mostly volunteer service.

definitely getting paid for it.

i have worked three colorado state games as law enforcement (not state patrol). last year i was on the field and was in charge of shadowing coach bobo at half and after one of the games. i must have looked like an idiot trying to keep up with him as he ran around the field.

to put things in perspective, it is not very hard for people to get on the field, my partner arrested a college kid who wandered down onto the sideline and into the team bench area on the sideline. the security that mans the stairs down onto the field (at least at the csu stadium) is private security and not necessarily on top of things. i think the idea is that it is a deterrent more than anything. but it did start when mcelwain was the coach and brought the sec tradition with him.

but if minnesota is anything like csu, providing security for a large gathering of people in one place is something that is taken pretty seriously. there is probably a large group of police working the game, including swat snipers and eod.

why do you think it would be a waste of money? tcf stadium is the size of a medium sized town during a game and many have drunk too much alcohol.

Highest paid state employee. Not a shock to me. Think fortune 500 CEO's. They are often escorted most everywhere.

Valid points. That is why I asked the questions. Thanks for your answers. On the waste of money for personal escorts thought.... I'll stand by that to some extent. You don't see personal escorts at most sporting events, and you're not hearing of any issues with those coaches. I guess, for the most part, I feel regular law enforcement in the stadium can handle things. Oh, and from a Wyoming Cowboy grad/fan, sorry you had to work at CSU.

The state troopers do a lot of things that might surprise you. Currently my son is working the World Equestrian Games in the NC Mountains. They have the added honor of getting hit by Florence in a next days. He will be working the State Fair in Raleigh next month too. I don't think he has assisted at any NC State games yet.
