Fresno State’s starting QB, Marcus McMaryion, is there due to the stupidity and stubbornness of former Oregon State and Wisconsin HC Gary Andersen. Recruited by former coach Mike Riley, McMaryion was a well regarded dual threat QB and baseball prospect. He was also a 4.0 student in HS. As a Redshirt Soph., he led the Beavers to season ending victories vs AZ (5 TD passes) and Oregon (breaking a 8 year losing streak in the Civil War rivalry). Following the season, Andersen brought in another transfer QB to and anointed him the starter despite reports that McMaryion was outplaying him.
He decided to transfer after Andersen named the new guy the starter. Beavers lost the team leader and Andersen lost the team. The result was the disaster of 2017 with Andersen quitting mid season. Andersen also did a similar thing at Wisconsin with Stave.
Marcus is a solid QB. Very bright with a decent arm and good enough speed to make plays with his legs. Ended up back in his hometown of Fresno.
