Herbstreit's Herbies

Brilliant mind with a brilliant take.

So is he saying he thinks there is a chance (however small) we do way better than expected and throw a wrench in the conference?

I think I would say that an intern or low level staffer threw together a list, some being educated guesses and others being darts thrown at a dart board, then Herb looked it over and rubber stamped it.

It's just for fun.

I disagree. Herbie knows the college landscape as well as anyone.

You think Herb actually spent his own time to sit down and bang this out? Well, I can't prove anything, but I doubt it ...

Head coaches also don't sit down and compile their own ballots for the coaches' poll, either. It's usually done by someone in the athletic dept, then the head coach looks it over quick and rubber stamps it. That's what I've heard, at least!

I don't think it would have been that hard for him to put it together. He just listed names and teams. A lot of the names listed are fairly well known, especially for someone like him.

Herbstreet is Gopher Territory.

Is it just me, or is it not a great time in internet history for d-bags to be unable to leave comments on ESPN articles any more?

We are 20 months removed from almost going 13-0.

9 of the 11 starters on defense were part of that team.
7 of the 11 starters on offense were part of that team.
All three specialists were part of that team,

Since then we've added the greatest recruiting class in Gopher history, brought in defensive transfers from Bama and Florida, built the best practice facility in the nation, added the best strength training coach in the nation, employed an NFL level nutritionist and built the best dining facility in the nation, taught the team how to refuse to lose, purged the team of non-elite players and coaches, hired the best wr coach in the nation, hired the best o-line coach in the nation, hired a former SEC def coordinator/NFL lb coach, employed the greatest motivational coach in the world, improved the skills of one of the best RBs in the Big Ten.

Big success for the Gophers should not be deemed a sleeper event. It should be expected.

Making a handful of lists? Yes, I think he was able to do that in his 7 months off. Not comparable to a coaches poll in season. They’re actually busy. Herbstreit watches and comments on college football for a living.

C'mon Herbstreit. You mention 3 B1G bands and not the one that was on the Superbowl halftime show with JT

Agreed...bulletin board material for UMMB! Maybe they will have a chance to change his mind when GameDay comes Nov. 17 to watch his B1G sleeper pick 9-1 Gophers take on NW...

I agree that of the teams that didn't make a bowl last year in the Big Ten, Minnesota has the best chance to outperform expectations. There's serious downside risk with so much inexperience at QB, but also the possibility of adding a competent passing game and returning the team's best defensive player means that it's not unreasonable for 5-7 to turn into 8-4 or so.

Preach it, brother! I think my 40 time got faster just by reading that.

We are 413 months removed from almost going 27-0-3. (3 ties)

15 of the 24 starters on offense were part of that team.
17 of the 42 starters on defense were part of that team.
All nine specialist were part of that team.

We had them frozen in liquid nitrogen, to preserve the state of their bodies, since that time has passed.

Since then, we've added the greatest recruiting class in the history of human kind (at least five guys are 8' tall or taller), brought in defensive transfers from the NFL and NHL, built the best practice facilities in the world ... no the solar system!, add the best strength training coach ... well actually screw it, we've decided to inject the entire team with massive quantities of race-horse steroids, taught the team how to not only refuse to accept a loss, but travel back in time and change the course of history, purged the entire university of the word "lose", hired the best coaching staff ... actually we trained computers with artificial intelligence to make the best coaching decisions possible with 100% probability, and we even gave Rodney Smith a full time motivational speaker and personal Asian masseuse.

Gopher football should EXPECT to be the champions of college football, FIFA World Cup, NASCAR, etc. It's not a sleeper event!

Of course he "banged this out" He also has the Herbies show running on ESPN right now, so I am pretty sure he put some time and thought into this.

1. He didn’t say to win the Big Ten, he said to be improved

2. Did anyone hear Rece Davis mention Gameday and the 2 talking about how cool it would be to go there when PJ gets the Gophers rolling and that they’ve never been there.
