Another lame schedule but thanks for this reminder: I never have to watch Tyra Buss "draw a foul" again!

A look at the Hoosiers: more depth and an ability to stretch the perimeter:

This season, depth seems to be less of a concern for Moren and her staff.

Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill are no longer on the team after graduating, but the Hoosiers added three talented freshmen, growth from their returning players and two transfers who are chomping at the bit to finally get on the court.

The three freshmen are Chanel Wilson, Aleksa Gulbe and Grace Berger. Wilson and Berger are both guards with impressive high school resumes. Both players will look to help sophomores Jaelynn Penn and Bendu Yeaney fill the point guard role that is now vacant after Buss graduated.

Gulbe is a 6-foot-3-inch forward from Latvia — the third player from Latvia in IU women’s basketball history — and is an athletic forward who can stretch the perimeter. She led the Under-19 Latvian League to a championship where she was named MVP after scoring 32 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in the championship game. IU’s post presence wasn’t the strongest last year, but Gulbe can help change that this season.

Without knowing how the freshmen will turn out, the starting five could be Penn and Yeaney; juniors Ali Patberg and Brenna Wise; and senior Kym Royster.

...

Patberg and Wise, both transfers who had to sit idly by last year, are ready to finally take off the practice jersey and put on the cream and crimson uniforms. Patberg is a guard and will likely be the first to get a shot at filling Buss’ roll in running the offense.

Although she might not have the explosive scoring ability, she has smooth shot from the outside and the patience to set up plays.

Wise is probably the replacement for Cahill. She has athleticism to play inside and out, and the strength to be a force down low. She won the three-point contest with Juwan Morgan at Hoosier Hysteria, so it shows she can also knock it down from long range.

The Hoosier sophomore class featuring:

Jaelynn Penn

This year’s team won’t have a “star” like Buss, but instead will have numerous talented players. They won’t have one go-to scorer, but instead countless explosive options.

That being said, sophomore guard Jaelynn Penn will be one of the leaders on this year’s team, both with her play and her leadership.

On the court, Penn set a freshman school record with 37 starts. She was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team, averaged 10.8 points, 4.9 rebounds per game and shot 42 percent from the field. Penn consistently improved throughout the season. In the WNIT, she averaged 14.6 points per game and shot 53 percent from the field.

According to coach Teri Moren, Penn has stood out in practice, calling her a “bucket getter,” and that “you have to have one of those on your team.” While it’s still early, a case can be made that Penn will be their go-to option this season.

...

Bendu Yeaney

Yeaney will have several roles this year. Similar to Penn, having started many games a year ago and received valuable experience all season, she will need to become more of a leader.

With her play, Yeaney can serve as a “Swiss army knife.” She has worked on her shooting, defense and ball handling over the summer, hoping to contribute to the team in every way possible.

On paper, Indiana doesn’t have a “point guard.” Junior transfer Ali Patberg will more than likely get the nod at point, but expect to see a heavy dose of Yeaney bringing the ball up the court as well.

Indiana (4-0) ran away from an over matched Florida (0-5) 83-64 in Bloomington. It was 39-33 IU at the half. Brenna Wise had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Hoosiers.

Jaelynn Penn’s late game heroics

As the game winded down, the game was there for the taking for both teams. There were 10 lead changes and two ties in the final quarter. But it was a big 3-pointer by Jaelynn Penn that delivered the decisive blow to UCLA. Penn knocked down an in-rhythm shot with 29 seconds left to give Indiana a 65-64 advantage. It was her first shot made from behind the arc and it was arguably one of the biggest shots of the game. She also hit a shot with 3:17 left which gave Indiana a one-point lead at the time.

Ali Patberg’s impressive start to the season

Ali Patberg has been out of competitive basketball games for quite some time, but has wasted no time getting back to being productive on the court. She is Indiana’s starting point guard and has shown why she has been deserving of replacing Tyra Buss. Patberg was once again IU’s co-leading scorer Sunday with 17 points and flirted with a triple-double finishing with nine rebounds and eight assists.

“I’m really proud of the resilience I saw from Ali Patberg as she pressured all afternoon and to only have one turnover. It was fantastic to see the leadership of the team from her but it took the entire team effort,” Moren said.

Patberg has been aggressive driving to the basket and has that same relentless attitude on the court as Buss had in past seasons. She only turned the ball over once while playing 38 minutes. With no true backup point guard, expect much more of this from Patberg moving forward.

I'm starting to think that the Hoosiers might be "for real", as they dismantled previously unbeaten Butler 66-46 to move to 8-0. I'm wondering if they'll move into the top 25 next week. I thought this team would miss Buss and Cahill a lot. They had some talented players coming back in Yeaney and Penn, but they've already shown that they'll have other contributors as well.

Indiana (10-1) managed to lose to Grambling (2-8) in Puerto Rico 65-62. I haven't seen any details. Next up for the Hoosiers: South Dakota.

Indiana fell behind by 14 at 46-60 to start the fourth quarter, they then went on an 11-0 run to cut it to 60-57, Grambling finished the game at free-throw line the rest of the way.

is this a loss for them similar to the san diego loss for gophers last year? worse? not as bad rpi/schedule/ncaa wise?

Through yesterday's game's Grambling's RPI was 231. Last season, Grambling finished with an RPI of 195 compared to San Diego which finished last season with an RPI of 165. So, yes it's likely an RPI ball and chain for the Hoosier's.

Oh, that's a bad loss for the Hoosiers. I was beginning to think that they were for real, but apparently not.

Doesn’t this loss drag down the RPI of the whole conference?

It's certainly not good for the conference. South Dakota (12-1), which has defeated Iowa State and @ Missouri (and Grambling for that matter) will be and interesting match-up for the Hoosiers.

The Hoosiers were without Jaelynn Penn during the last quarter.

Ten minutes remained for IU to keep its undefeated start to the season alive, and again the team got off to a slow start. IU went down 14 points to start the fourth and sophomore guard Jaelynn Penn tweaked her ankle and did not return.

But the Hoosiers went on an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to 60-57 and make things interesting down the stretch.

Without Penn on the floor, Patberg, Yeaney and Berger hit a combined seven-straight free throws to inch the Hoosiers closer. Finally, with 1:30 left, Yeaney’s jumper regained IU the lead at 62-61.

It was short-lived as Grambling State drilled a three-pointer to take back the lead that it never relinquished from then on.

Patberg, who finished with a game-high 21 points, got a few good looks from the three-point line near the end to tie the game, but couldn’t find the bottom of the net. Time expired and the Hoosiers lost their first game of the year to the now 2-8 Tigers. Sixty-five points was also Grambling State’s highest point total of the year.

Hoosiers bounce back with nice win over South Dakota, 68-60. Indiana moves to 11-1; SD falls to 12-2. Patberg with 25 points and 6 rebounds for Indiana.

Ali Patberg will attempt to end her slump in Piscataway. It'll will be an intriguing outing.

A potential reason for the turnover problem could be because of Indiana’s point guard play at the moment. The last three games for Ali Patberg have not been the norm for the Columbus, Indiana native. Patberg has scored as many points (13) as she has committed turnovers.

After the Maryland game, Moren said they wanted to go back and show clips to Patberg to see if they could diagnose and fix the problem she is currently having. If Indiana can get Patberg back on track, it would go a long way in getting Indiana back to playing the consistent basketball Moren wants to see.
