Not sure what Calhoun's major is, but I bet it's not chemistry...

C. Vivian Stringer is excited about Sierra Calhoun.

Rutgers women's basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer has announced the addition of Ohio State transfer Sierra Calhoun to the 2018-19 roster, it was announced on (Monday). A 6-0 guard originally from Brooklyn, New York will have one year of eligibility to play with the Scarlet Knights and will be available immediately.

"We are excited to welcome back Sierra back home to play for the Scarlet Knights," said head coach C. Vivian Stringer. "Sierra has made herself known as a tremendous 3-point shooter and has the ability to score like (recent graduate) Tyler Scaife. Her ball handling is tight, you can isolate her and she can still post it up. She is a prolific scorer who can do it all. Sierra is a WNBA caliber player reminiscent of some of our great local talent that we have signed in the past such as Essence Carson, Epiphanny Prince and Kia Vaughn. We are excited that the likes of Sierra and (rising redshirt sophomore guard) Arella Guirantes from the New York area have chosen to come back home and play for the Scarlet Knights."

Perhaps we will see less scowling in Piscataway:

With the loss of leading scorer Tyler Scaife, adding a player of Calhoun’s caliber is a major addition to the roster. With seniors Stasha Carey and KK Sanders back in the fold, as well as the addition of 5-star recruit Zippy Broughton, head coach C. Vivian Stringer has a solid nucleus of talent heading into this year’s campaign, as the program looks to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015 after narrowly missing doing so last season.

Rutgers non-conference schedule with last seasons NCAA final RPI:

287 Central Connecticut State
189 Stony Brook
173 @ Charlotte
93 St Francis
82 Albany
69 (N) Drake
47 @ Virginia Tech
31 LSU

Rutgers plays Drake in the Vancouver Showcase and then could face two of the following: Notre Dame, Gonzaga, South Carolina, ETSU, or Western Kentucky.

Rutgers (4-1) led Drake (5-0) 44-29 at halftime and then produced a Rutgers like 7 points in the third and 8 points in the fourth. Meanwhile, Drake put up 40 second half points to take the win 69-59. Rutgers shot 5-20 from three while Drake was 11-16.

Rutgers (4-2) scored by quarter 8, 13, 10 and 9 in their 57-40 loss to Gonzaga in Vancouver.

Rutgers built a 20-13 lead with just more than 3 minutes left in the first half, but a layup by Melody Kempton (Post Falls) with 7 seconds remaining tied the game at 21 heading into the break.

The Zags used an 11-3 run early in the third quarter to take control. GU shot 54.5 percent and forced five turnovers in the frame. Gonzaga outscored Rutgers 15-9 in the final quarter and converted 11 of 12 at the line to cement the win.

Morris is a former 5-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American who was dismissed from Baylor this past September for “a violation of team rules”. She averaged 9.1 points, 3.4 assists, and 2.9 rebounds in 34 games and 8 starts as a freshman last season for a Baylor team that went 32-2 and made the Sweet Sixteen. Morris led the team from three-point range, making 28 of 62 attempts for 45%. She was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team and All-Big 12 Championship team after combining for 37 points in the semifinals and finals.

The Texas native led her high school Legacy Christian Academy to a Class 3A State Championship in 2017 during her senior season when she was named Gatorade Player of the Year for the state.

Hopefully, Morris will benefit from the fresh start under Hall of Fame Head Coach C. Vivian Stringer after one of the premier programs in the country let her go for an unspecified violation. Morris gave indication on her twitter account that she’ll be eligible to play in the second semester of next season in January 2020. Rutgers has not announced her transfer as of yet.

This explains why Caitlin Jenkins was suspended for Sunday's Gopher game.

With the Rutgers women's basketball team in the middle of a renaissance this winter, not everything is positive for C. Vivian Stringer's club.

Senior forward Caitlin Jenkins was arrested on Saturday afternoon, and charged with simple assault and criminal mischief in connection with a domestic violence incident. She was released on her own recognizance.

She was arrested by Rutgers police, but the offense occurred in New Brunswick

Jenkins did not suit up on Sunday when Rutgers lost at Minnesota. After the game, the team announced, via its postgame notes, that Jenkins had been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team policy.

Jenkins has played in 20 games, averaging 6.0 points and 6.8 rebounds for the 17-5, 20th-ranked Scarlet Knights. Rutgers is Jenkins' third school after playing her freshman year at Southern Mississippi, and her sophomore year at Southern University Shreveport, a junior college.

Reasons why Alexis Morris was released from Baylor.

Jenkins’ arrest occurred about two weeks after Rutgers announced the addition of Baylor transfer Alexis Morris, who has had her own recent legal issues.

Morris was arrested by Texas State University police in San Marcos in September after allegedly assaulting another woman inside a dormitory hall, according to police documents obtained by NJ Advance Media. Morris was dismissed from Baylor’s women’s basketball team two days later. She was then arrested in late December in her hometown of Beaumont, Texas, on marijuana possession and possession of a dangerous object charges, according to arrest records.

Sounds like Stringer isn't shying away from "at risk" athletes. With someone of Morris' abilities, the risk is understandable. But that will come back to bite a coach sometimes.

My theory: This is all karma, coming back to bite CVS for throwing last season.

C Vivian Stringer taking a leave of absence:

The university’s athletics department announced Stringer’s leave in a press release Sunday morning.

Timothy Eatman, who coached the team last Thursday night in an 86-76 loss at Michigan, will take over the head-coaching duties on an interim basis. Now in his fourth season on Rutgers’ staff, Eatman also served as acting head coach for three games following the illness and passing of Stringer’s mother, Thelma Stoner, in 2016.

Stringer is expected to return to coach the Scarlet Knights following the Big Ten Tournament, a school spokesperson said Sunday. Stringer, who will turn 71 on March 16, is in her 48th season of coaching and in her 24th year at Rutgers.

"As you can imagine this was not an easy decision, however, in consultation with my doctors, it is in my best interest to spend time to get healthy before returning to the day-to-day grind of coaching,” Stringer said in a statement. “I would not be able to do this without the faith in my assistants Tim Eatman, Kelley Gibson and Nadine Domond to handle the program in my absence.''

CVS's full quote:

"As you can imagine this was not an easy decision, however, in consultation with my doctors, it is in my best interest to spend time to get healthy before returning to the day-to-day grind of coaching," said Stringer. "I would not be able to do this without the faith in my assistants Tim Eatman, Kelley Gibson and Nadine Domond to handle the program in my absence. I know our young ladies can finish the season strong playing Scarlet Knight basketball and I will rejoin the team as soon as I can. I would like to thank the many friends, fans and members of the Rutgers Athletics community that have sent me well wishes and I look forward to seeing you all soon."

Hope she’ll be okay, but will this be an advantage or disadvantage for the Gophers?

https://scarletknights.com/news/201...o-remain-on-leave-for-duration-of-season.aspx

Rutgers University Head Women's Basketball Coach C. Vivian Stringer will remain on sick leave for the duration of the season based upon the recommendation of her physicians. While Coach Stringer's doctors have assured her of a full recovery, they have urged her to remain on leave. She plans to return to the team and coaching duties later this year.

Assistant coach Tim Eatman will continue to serve as acting head coach in her absence. Eatman assumed interim coaching responsibilities on Feb. 24 and has directed the Scarlet Knights to a 4-1 record. With a 22-9 overall mark and an RPI of 30, Rutgers is a strong candidate to earn an at-large bid to the 2019 NCAA Championship.
