Gophers football coach P.J. Fleck feels comfortable with safeties Antoine Winfield Jr. and Jacob Huff as starters heading to the team’s the first preseason practice Wednesday.

Beyond that, who knows?

“That’s a great question,” Fleck said Tuesday during Minnesota’s local media day on the U campus.

With the transfers of Adam Beck to Texas Tech and Kendarian Handy-Holly to Auburn, Minnesota is without two returning safeties who would have provided much-needed depth. That forces true freshmen into the mix.

“You might see a C.J. Smith be at a safety,” Fleck said. “You might see Josh Aune as a true freshman be back there. Benny Sapp might get an opportunity earlier than thought, than we’ve talked about. You could see a rotation of different guys. Maybe (cornerback Antoine) Shenault (goes) back there at times.”

Benny Sapp III, the son of former Vikings cornerback Benny Sapp, is coming off a meniscus tear that cut short his senior year at Eden Prairie in 2017. That’s on top of two ACL tears he suffered in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., before he moved to Minnesota for his junior year.

“He looks really good,” Fleck said. “Again, we haven’t played football, so I’m not sure, but when you look at him physically and watch him move and you watch him backpedal, he has a lot of twitch and explosion. It looks like he feels comfortable.”
