Default Hugh McCutcheon to be inducted into International Volleyball Hall of Fame

Minnesota volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon will be inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. He is one of five members in the Class of 2018. McCutcheon will be presented with the award in a ceremony on Nov. 10 in Massachusetts.

The Gophers' head coach was elected by past International Volleyball Hall of Fame inductees, who voted for the most worthy candidates. Overall, 140 individuals across 24 different countries will have been enshrined into the Hall of Fame. Others in the 2018 class include: men's volleyball players Gilberto "Giba" Godoy Filho, Bas van de Goor, women's player Evgenia Artamonova Estes and Japanese leader Hiroshi Toyoda.

As a player, McCutcheon was a member of the New Zealand junior and senior national teams before arriving to the United States. Following his playing days, he made his mark in the coaching ranks.

McCutcheon coached the U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team to the 2008 Olympic Games (gold medal), leading them to one of their best seasons ever. He then transitioned into a new role as head coach of the Women's National Team. In four years at the helm, McCutcheon led the women to a 106-39 record, including the 2012 Olympic games (silver medal).

He left the international game following the 2012 Olympics and became the head coach at Minnesota. Under his direction, the Gophers have qualified for two Final Fours, won the 2015 Big Ten Championship and finished in the top-16 during five of his six seasons as head coach.

McCutcheon will be enshrined into the Hall of Fame during a set of induction events in Massachusetts from Nov. 8-10.

Didn't know that there was a International Volleyball Hall of Fame. Are there International Hall of Fames for other sports?

Just makes more all the more thankful that we have Hugh at the U.

The volleyball program has been one of the best on campus for years and with how he's been recruiting in the last few cycles, it figures to be one of the athletic department's staples for years to come.
