It’s watch list season and that means a few Gophers are being monitored closely for awards.

Gophers running back Rodney Smith has been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List and linebacker Thomas Barber was placed on the Bednarik Award Watch List.

The Maxwell Award is given to America’s College Player of the Year and the Bednarik Award honors College Defensive Player of the Year.

Senior Rodney Smith has notched 626 carries for 2,805 yards and 21 touchdowns in 37 career games. He also has added 56 receptions for 419 yards through the air. If he can tally 1,260 all-purpose yards this season, he will break Darrell Thompson’s school record (5,109).

Junior Thomas Barber has quickly become one of the top defensive players in the Big Ten. He started 12 games last season, tallying 115 tackles (76 solo), 10.5 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles. He cemented himself as a key playmaker and run defender in Minnesota’s defense.

Both Smith and Barber will be key contributors for the Gophers this season as they search for veteran leadership among an inexperienced roster.
