Iowa depth chart hits.

Iowa cornerback Manny Rugamba, started eight games last year as a sophomore, announces he is transferring. The corner who started opposite him, Josh Jackson, left with a year of eligibility. 2nd round pick by Packers.

Do the Gophers have a quarterback who can throw the ball? If not, why would I care if Iowa has had a couple cornerbacks leave?

Morgan and Annexstad both looked better at throwing the ball and moving in the pocket at Spring game than Rhoda and Croft. Both showed touch, accuracy, some zing, some needle threading. Tyler Johnson looked very good catching the ball. Lot of hype on Bell and Bateman from PJ, who knows good WR talent. Douglas looked good starting as a true frosh before injury. Howard flashed some in first year on field. Seth Green could give really nice element catching ball at tight end (as could Paulson and SpannFord). Rodney looked great receiving the ball out of the backfield in Spring game. Kieft and Beebe are big strong physical mature tight ends that can help pass block and maybe surprise as pass catching options. Returning four starters on oline along with two veteran depth guys and mixing in three four star oline recruits and a top five juco OT recruit bodes well for pass protection. (Oline redshirts also off Schmitz, Sassack, juco Davis...Boe, Beier, Norton, York join the unit...lot of depth on oline). Getting Callahan in charge of the pass blocking unit should be good, he was doing amazing things at WMU, getting lineman to the League. New tight end coach Clay Patterson is one of most innovative minds in college footballl on using pass option. Second year with Simon should show more gains in wr skills. Rodney Smith forces teams to respect the run, should allow pass game to have some nice opportunities. Very excited about Gopher passing attack in 2018.

Iowa had one receiver who had caught a pass in college going into last year.

They won 8 games, destroyed Ohio st....

We did not.

Not sure we are quite at the point where we can count opponent depth chart changes and really know anything.

We can know Iowa has lost a LOT.

Iowa loses all three of their linebackers, including all American Josey Jewell, drafted by Denver. They lose Wadley and Butler, their top two running backs. They lose a second round olineman in Daniels, selected by the Bears. former Iowa CB Josh Jackson was taken by the Pack in round two.
Akrum Wadley appears like he is headed to Tennessee as a undrafted free agent. Former Iowa OL Sean Welsh, signed a free agent deal with the Washington Redskins. Another former OL Ike Boettger signed a free agent deal with the Buffalo Bills.

Former Iowa LB Ben Niemann signed a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Matt Vandeberg had tryout with the New York Jets. Boone Myers tryout with the Colts. And James Butler will get tryouts with both the Jets and the Redskins.

We played Iowa tough...losing by 7, 7 and 5 last three. Not too far removed from destroying them in 2014 like we destroyed Huskers last year.

True, but this isn't the first time Iowa has put a lot of players in the draft. And the last time they replaced them with this years crop of NFL talent...so the question becomes who is behind these players and what their projectory is. We don't know this now and won't until they play out their college careers. Very excited about the future for our gophers, but when comparing other teams, don't talk to me about who left, talk to me about what's there. Do you have any insight on their replacements?

From another point of view, if I'm Iowa what does it matter the talent level of croft, what can the new qbs do?
